Grubhub confirms data breach, both drivers and customers are affected

Mashable - 3 hours 43 min ago

Grubhub, the food delivery service, has been hacked. On Monday, the company confirmed a data breach that affects both its drivers and customers.

According to Grubhub, the malicious actor was able to gain entry into its systems via a third-party vendor that provides services for Grubhub's support team.

The hacker was able to access private information connected to customers, merchants, and drivers who previously interacted with Grubhub's customer service. Campus diners were also affected.

SEE ALSO: AT&T, Ticketmaster data breach hackers charged with stealing 50 billion records

Grubhub says the exact type of data stolen is different for each affected individual. The hacker obtained names, email addresses, and phone numbers. The unauthorized user also stole partial payment card information from some campus diners, which include the card type and last four digits on the card. Hashed passwords for "certain legacy systems" were also obtained.

It's unclear just how big the data breach is.

Grubhub says an investigation found that the intrusion was carried out through an account connected to a third-party service provider. Upon noticing the intrusion, Grubhub said they immediately removed the compromised account's access and terminated the service provider entirely from their systems.

Grubhub shared that customer and merchant login credentials and passwords were not breached. Financial information such as full payment card numbers, bank account details, drivers licenses, and social security numbers were also unaffected.

Bill threatens to make using DeepSeek a crime for Americans

Mashable - 4 hours 50 sec ago

A proposed new law would make it illegal for Americans to download the popular Chinese AI app DeepSeek.

On Monday, Sen. Josh Hawley, the Republican senator from Missouri, introduced legislation that would "prohibit the import from or export to China of artificial intelligence technology."

While the announcement mentions DeepSeek, the bill called the Decoupling America’s Artificial Intelligence Capabilities from China Act doesn't explicitly mention the Chinese AI company. Instead it speaks more broadly about protecting U.S. intellectual property and preventing a foreign adversary from using technology that undermines national security.

SEE ALSO: DeepSeek just taught the AI industry 5 hard lessons

"America cannot afford to empower our greatest adversary at the expense of our own strength. Ensuring American economic superiority means cutting China off from American ingenuity and halting the subsidization of CCP innovation," said Hawley in the announcement, before referencing the "international concern" triggered by the launch of DeepSeek's R1 model.

In a matter of days, R1's arrival battered tech stocks and spooked the AI industry because the large language model (LLM) was reportedly made for a fraction of the cost of AI models like OpenAI's GPT-4, posing a threat to the American AI industry. OpenAI also claimed DeepSeek trained its AI off of OpenAI's data, which the internet found ironic since OpenAI is accused of doing the same thing to develop its own models.

There are also DeepSeek's ethics and privacy concerns. Users have discovered instances of censorship when using R1, such as not answering questions about Tiananmen Square or evading truths about Uyghur oppression. Then there's DeepSeek's privacy policy, which says it collects extensive data from users and stores it on Chinese servers, meaning it's vulnerable to access by the Chinese government.

With potential surveillance and data privacy issues in mind, the DeepSeek frenzy echoes the TikTok ban, which was put into effect for similar reasons. However, unlike the TikTok ban, Hawley's legislation seeks to penalize people for downloading DeepSeek, by making it a criminal act. If passed, the bill would enforce a $1 million fine, jail time for up to 20 years, or both, based on the Export Control Reform Act of 2018.

In addition to the ban of imports and exports of Chinese AI technology, Hawley's bill also proposes the prohibition of American companies "from conducting AI research in China or in cooperation with Chinese companies," and banning U.S. companies from investing in Chinese AI companies.

The language of the legislation is broad, which could be an effort to eliminate any loopholes that led to the rise of DeepSeek in the first place. Part of the reason why DeepSeek was developed so cost-efficiently was because of the U.S. restricted access to Nvidia GPUs imposed on China, forcing the company to work with chips that were possibly smuggled, less powerful, or purchased before the sanctions.

Tweet may have been deleted

However, some users on X commented on Hawley's post arguing that a reactionary bill hindering open source AI development could ultimately stifle U.S. innovation or push Chinese companies to find workarounds and innovate new technologies.

Snag a refurbished OLED Nintendo Switch on sale for $50 off at Best Buy

Mashable - 4 hours 46 min ago

SAVE $50: The Nintendo Switch – OLED Model (Geek Squad Certified Refurbished) is on sale for just $299.99 at Best Buy as of Feb. 4. That's 14% off its $349.99 MSRP and $20 better than its price in the My Nintendo Store.

Best Buy has the best deal on a current-generation Nintendo Switch ahead of its successor's release later this year: As of Feb. 4, a white OLED system in Geek Squad Certified Refurbished condition is on sale there for just $299.99, or $50 off its usual sticker price. It works like new and has a 90-day warranty.

For comparison's sake, the same refurbished Switch is going for $319.99 in the My Nintendo Store, Nintendo's official online storefront, though it comes with a one-year warranty. It's also worth noting that this particular Switch is the only discounted Switch that's still in stock at Best Buy: All of its bundle deals and other refurbished models listed for $10 to $50 off were sold out at the time of writing. (That includes the OLED Switch's neon blue/neon red counterpart.)

SEE ALSO: Nintendo Switch 2: Every new feature and game spotted in the announcement

Released in 2021, or four years after the original Switch console, the OLED variant features a sturdier kickstand, better speakers, and twice as much built-in storage (64GB) compared to its predecessor. The OLED in its name refers to its 7-inch OLED display, which is crisper and more colorful than the OG model's 6.2-inch LCD display. It's effectively a Switch 1.5.

Shortly after it launched, then-Senior Games Reporter Adam Rosenberg called the OLED model "the best Switch yet" while cautioning existing Switch owners against rushing to upgrade. That's probably still the case, but if you're running into issues with an existing console, this is a tough deal to beat. First-time Switch owners and those with a handheld-only Lite model would also be wise to consider it.

If you're waiting for an even more substantial upgrade, it could be worth holding out for the upcoming Switch 2, which will have an even bigger screen and new controllers that might function like computer mice. But just know that all signs point to it being around $100 pricier.

Google Messages could get upgraded 911 emergency texting soon

Mashable - 6 hours 5 min ago

Emergency services on Android phones could get a big boost in functionality soon.

Android Authority took a look at the code for Google Messages in an Android APK teardown and found currently dormant lines of code referencing "emergency RCS messaging." RCS, in case you aren't aware, stands for Rich Communication Services, an open standard for mobile instant messaging that has been adopted by both Google and Apple in recent years.

Emergency messaging refers to the ability to text 911 instead of calling in times of danger, which Google said would come to Google Messages last year. That feature is currently available on iPhones.

SEE ALSO: Google offers voluntary buyouts to the Android and Pixel team

On Google's end, it seems RCS emergency texting will carry some significant benefits. Rather than just being able to text your problem to a 911 call center, the code suggests you'll also be able to send photos and videos, as well as sharing your precise location.

There are often times when discretion is required while contacting authorities, and this feature will theoretically allow people to do that.

And since Apple now supports RCS (Android text bubbles are still green, though), iPhones could possibly get access to these upgrades as well. There's no telling precisely when Google will roll these updates out, but if the code is already present in Google Messages, it can't be too long now.

Finding a low-stakes washable rug doesn't necessarily have to just mean waiting for a Ruggable sale (though those do happen often). You could also try out a Ruggable dupe, like Rugs USA. That selection is inherently cheaper than Ruggable at full price — but with the current 30% off sitewide sale that's going on, bringing home a massive machine-washable 8 x 10 rug could easily cost you no more than $300.

The 30% discount unlocks when you enter code GET30 and applies to everything on the site but clearance. (Rugs already on sale are still safe to get the extra discount as long as they're not officially on clearance.)

Size wise, there are runners, huge 12-foot x 15-foot area options, round rugs, and everything in between.

Washing these rugs is as easy as you're hoping. A good rug can change the entire vibe of your home. Seriously, if you're working with mostly naked floors, you might want to consider getting an area rug to make things feel more welcoming. Buy the right one, and it can really bring a room together.

By far the worst thing about rugs, though, is that they can quickly get expensive. That's why it's a good idea to pick one up during a big sale, and lucky for you, we found a good one. For a limited time, Revival is hosting a buy two rugs, get 20% off sale — a fantastic option if you're looking to shop for more than one room.

SEE ALSO: Need a robot vacuum that actually works on carpet? These 3 did the best in my home.

Revival's rugs are not only stylish, but also super convenient because they're totally machine-washable (they remind us a lot of Ruggable's offerings). They don't necessarily have to break the bank, either. Some are as cheap as $79 depending on what size you get, and most of their styles range from runners to large-area-covering rugs. You'll also get free shipping, and first-time customers can get $40 off. To take advantage of the BOGO sale, all you need to do is add two rugs to your cart. After that, the discount will be automatically added at checkout (if that doesn't work, just type in code BUY2GET20 in the promo box). Now get to shopping before you miss out on the sale — we can't wait to see what your living room makeover looks like.

Our favorite dupe for the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is on sale at Walmart

Mashable - 6 hours 49 min ago

SAVE $14: As of Feb. 4, the Laifen Swift hair dryer is on sale for $125.99 at Walmart with a coupon. It usually retails for $139.99, so shoppers save 10%. Elsewhere, it's completely sold out.

The Dyson Supersonic is an aesthetically stunning hair dryer that's quiet, fast, light, powerful, and designed to minimize heat damage while smoothing hair, but its $429.99 price tag puts it firmly in "splurge" territory. Enter: dupes.

After testing a bunch of low-cost blow dryers from established brands, Mashable's Lead Shopping Reporter Bethany Allard found that the Laifen Swift best replicated the sleek look of the Supersonic and what she called "the Supersonic experience": It dries hair in a way that "feels quick, easy, and at least a little luxurious," Allard wrote. Crucially, the Laifen Swift also retails for a more palatable $139.99 — and as of Feb. 4, it's on sale for even less.

The black and silver variants of the Swift are marked down to $125.99 at Walmart with the help of a $14 on-page coupon. (You'll need to create or sign in to a free Walmart account to see it.) That isn't a huge discount, admittedly — it works out to 10% off — but it's a decent deal considering the Swift is sold out in every color on the Laifen website, and that's your only other buying option.

Compact enough for travel and easy stashing, the Swift is super lightweight, weighing in at just 0.89 pounds. (It's almost a whole pound lighter than the Supersonic.) It features two air speeds and three heat settings that are indicated by a color-changing ring light on the back of the device. In her testing, Allard "almost never found myself needing to go beyond the first [air speed]," finding it strong enough to rough-dry a full head of wet hair before bed. She was also content to stick with the two lower heat settings (cool or warm), as the highest one got almost too hot.

While the Supersonic comes with five magnetic attachments, the Swift only includes a single smooth nozzle. For extra concentrator and diffuser nozzles, the Laifen Swift Special package is an upgrade option: at the time of writing, it's on sale at Walmart and the Laifen website for $143.99 (or $16 off).
