Rick Hatchett (Walton Goggins) has been brooding all over The White Lotus this season, throwing full buckets over his girlfriend Chelsea's (Aimee Lou Wood) attempts at holiday fun and dropping a surprise mystery Bangkok trip into their schedule — one he'll take alone.
But now, after Season 3, episode 4, we've got a strong idea about why they're actually in Thailand at all — and it's not just to have an expensive holiday. Let's get into why Rick chose this particular White Lotus and what his real agenda is.
SEE ALSO: Did you catch this Oscar winner's cameo in 'The White Lotus' Season 3? What happens in The White Lotus Season 3, episode 4? It all comes out on the boat. Credit: Fabio Lovino / HBODuring the guests' cruise around the islands on Greg's (Jon Gries) superyacht, Chelsea hits her limit of Rick's unrelenting gloom. Pulling him aside on deck, she draws a proverbial line in the sand and demands her secretive partner let her in or she's out. When Rick responds asking what Chelsea would like to know, she starts with the question we all have: "Why are we here? What's in Bangkok?"
After resisting, Rick finally tells the truth: "We're here because the fuckin' dude who murdered my father owns this hotel."
OK!
What do we know about Rick's father's murder? Rick's deepest trauma happened before he was born. Credit: Fabio Lovino / HBOThe details of Rick's father's death come up during his stress management session with spiritual counsellor and meditation teacher Dr. Amrita (Shalini Peiris) in episode 2. Here, Rick reveals that his father was murdered before he was born, a loss that forms the core of his seemingly unlawful life choices.
In episode 4, Rick tells Chelsea that while he never knew his father, he knew him to be a "do-gooder" who was in Thailand when he suddenly disappeared in suspicious circumstances. "He came to Thailand to help people," Rick says on the boat. "He was trying to help these locals keep a shitty American from stealing their land — I really don't know all the details. But my father was here trying to do the right thing, and one day he disappeared. They never found him."
We also learn in episode 4 that Rick's mother, who died when he was 10 from a drug overdose, gave him the name of his father's murderer on her deathbed. And that name? Jim Hollinger.
Who is Jim Hollinger? We've seen Rick staring at glamorous hotel owner, wellness author, and famous singer Sritala (Lek Patravadi) since arriving at the White Lotus, and he's not hid his disappointment over her husband's absence at the hotel.
When Rick and Chelsea first arrive in episode 1, Mook (Lisa / Lalisa Manobal) confirms to Rick that the owners of the hotel are Sritala and her American husband, Jim Hollinger. It's the name Rick's had etched in his brain since his traumatic childhood, and one that brought him here. Having read it in the news, Rick knew Hollinger was in hospital on the island, but unfortunately he's one day late to meet the man — Hollinger flew to Bangkok the day before Rick arrived.
All we really know about Hollinger is that he's a powerful American in Thailand, who owns the White Lotus "and half of Thailand" according to Rick. Did he murder Rick's father for meddling in a land grab? Or is there more to the story?
What's Rick going to do in Bangkok? "The guy ruined my life from day one. He doesn't have to answer to me?" Credit: Fabio Lovino / HBOEssentially, as Chelsea says to Rick on the yacht, "Is this a bit 'You killed my father, prepare to die?'"
Considering Rick's the type of erratic guy who'll free a bunch of venomous snakes while high, anything's possible once Rick catches up to Hollinger in Bangkok. Despite Chelsea's pleas for Rick not to "do something stupid," Rick says he simply wants to look the man who murdered his father in the face. But will he move beyond confrontation and exact revenge?
"The guy ruined my life from day one. He doesn't have to answer to me?" asks Rick.
"You're not going to just talk to him are you? I know you, Rick, this is what you do," replies Chelsea, alluding to his possibly violent or criminal past. In episode 1, Rick reminds Chelsea he "can't go to Australia," indicating he'd be arrested there, but it's unclear exactly how much she knows about his lucrative line of work.
What will come of this interaction? Credit: Fabio Lovino / HBOOne notable moment we don't yet have answers for lies in episode 3, when Rick introduces himself to Sritala at breakfast. Pretending to be a producer and procuring her business card, he promises a fake meeting with a director in Bangkok, where she is travelling to join her husband. We're thinking this might be a card Rick has to play in future episodes?
The big question is, what exactly will Rick do when he finds Jim Hollinger in Bangkok? Chelsea tells Rick he's a "victim of his own decisions" during their first dinner at the White Lotus — will he remain on-brand?

Hideo Kojima has once again served up a fresh batch of "What the hell did I just watch?"
The legendary game director took the stage at SXSW to unveil a brand-new look at his much-anticipated sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Joining him for the panel were Norman Reedus (returning as Sam Porter Bridges), Troy Baker, and French music director/designer Woodkid. The nearly 10-minute trailer — shown to an eager crowd at the Austin Convention Center — is classic Kojima: jaw-dropping visuals, eerie monsters, and a healthy dose of beautifully bizarre chaos.
It’s weird. It’s stunning. And, honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Not only did we get fresh gameplay, but we finally have a release date: June 26. Death Stranding 2 picks up where the first game left off, following Sam Porter Bridges as he and his allies wrestle with the existential fallout of their mission. Death Stranding 2's tagline, "Should we have connected?" appears to reference the first game's focus on connecting the scattered remains of the United States. Now, it looks as though the sequel will question whether all that effort was worth it.
This sequel brings a new journey, a fresh setting, and an expanded cast of characters. A previous trailer introduced us to Troy Baker’s crow-inspired maniac, but this latest look unveils Luca Marinelli’s Neil, the leader of a mysterious new faction — sporting a headband that makes him look suspiciously like Solid Snake from Metal Gear.
It’s an exciting time for Kojima and his studio, with the team not only gearing up for Death Stranding 2 but the director also announcing a global concert tour, Strands Of Harmony — and a full-fledged film adaptation in collaboration with the award-winning A24.
You can pre-order Death Stranding 2: On the Beach on March 17, 2025.
If you've ever gotten a direct message on Instagram in a language you don't speak very well, it can be annoying to have to copy the text, open a browser, head to translate.google.com and translate the message, all to just return to the original app and respond. But an Instagram feature released in February allows users to translate messages right in the DM — and it's pretty simple.
"Staying connected with friends and family around the world just got easier. With Instagram’s new message translation feature, you can effortlessly communicate around the globe without worrying about a language barrier," Instagram wrote in a press release about the feature. "Whether you’re catching up with your cousins in Korea or your BFF abroad in Spain – you can translate their messages directly within your DMs, helping you stay close to your loved ones even when you’re apart."
Here's how to translate a message within Instagram DMs.

At SXSW 2025, the panel "Aesthetic Access for VR: Centering Disabled Artistry" showcased Territory, a groundbreaking virtual reality experience that proved that accessibility isn’t just an add-on — it’s an art form.
Created by Kinetic Light and Double Eye Studios, Territory is the first fully "aesthetically accessible" VR experience. Instead of retrofitting an existing VR program with accessibility features like captions and audio descriptions, the team built them into the creative process from the start.
"Access is no longer an accommodation that retroactively makes an experience accessible to disabled audiences," said Kinetic Light's Laurel Lawson during the panel. "Instead, access is the providence of art itself."
SEE ALSO: ChatGPT is ableist toward applicants with disabilities, new study findsSet in a post-apocalyptic world, Territory tells its story through aerial dance, haptic feedback, and spatialized sound. Viewers take on the role of a "witness," feeling the impact of barbed wire both physically and metaphorically. The experience uses custom haptic motifs, allowing vibrations to convey movement and emotion — a game-changer for blind and low-vision users.
Even captions are reimagined. Instead of static text, Territory’s captions move dynamically, following characters and poetically interpreting music and sound effects. "Most of the caption systems that we tested couldn't reach the level of detail [we wanted], so we had to construct something from scratch," said Kiira Benz, Double Eye's executive creative director.
Accessibility in VR is still evolving, but Territory sets a new standard — where access isn’t just about inclusion but innovation. By making accessibility an artistic choice, Kinetic Light and Double Eye Studios challenge creators to rethink how VR can be truly immersive for all.
Lawson emphasized that "access is not backfilling" and should be integrated from the beginning because designing with accessibility in mind deepens artistic practice.

The social media and bookmarking platform was one of the most popular websites around in 2006, before the boom of platforms like Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram helped to usher in its obsolescence. But Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian are bringing Digg back — with a relaunch that aims to fix all our problems with modern social media.
"The social space online is definitely harsher, it feels like, than it’s ever been before," Justin Mezzell, who will serve as the new company’s CEO, said, according to the Associated Press. "It feels really difficult to connect. I think the platforms have gotten more disconnected. You know, if ever there was a true town hall of the internet, it feels like it has been deconstructed in a pretty big way."
So the company is offering an alternative: A return to the past with a focus on — you guessed it — AI.
"By combining Ohanian's and Rose's historical knowledge and deep understanding of what has and hasn't worked from their experiences at Reddit and Digg with today's technological advancements – particularly in AI – Digg plans to become an online destination with humanity and connection at its core," the company said in a press release.
Digg originally launched in 2004 and was sold for parts in 2012. Its podcast, Diggnation, ran from 2005 to 2011 and was brought back in August 2024.
"Online communities thrive when there's a balance between technology and human judgment. We're bringing Digg back to ensure that balance exists," Ohanian said in the press release. "Kevin and I are here to build something better than what social platforms are offering today. AI should handle the grunt work in the background while humans focus on what they do best: building real connections. No one dreams of spending their day hunting down spam or playing content police - they want to create, connect, and build thriving communities. I'm all in on this chapter."
The company announced it would be reintroducing the platform during SXSW on March 5 during a livestream of its podcast, Diggnation, and people seem pretty happy. In the comment section of the nearly 1.5-hour livestream of the Diggnation podcast, the comments are overwhelmingly positive — although this is just a slice of the type of people who would not only watch a livestream of a Diggnation podcast announcement but also comment on it, so take it with a grain of salt.
"The world has its issues right now, but having Diggnation back is one of the best surprises for 2025. Love you guys!" one user commented.
"This was so fuxing awesome. Can’t believe they are actually back," another user said.
Digg was the site that originally popularized up-votes and down-votes that are so typical on online posts today. But, despite Digg's pioneering introduction of this feature to internet culture it was the very up-votes and down-votes that led to its downfall in the first place. As ZDNET reported, the site took down the votes after there was a censorship campaign against left-leaning users by users who called themselves "Digg Patriots." People stopped using Digg, went all in on Reddit, and here we are.
It isn't live just yet, but you can sign up to get early access when invites go live at Digg's website.
I'll admit it: I miss the 2000s frozen yogurt craze. There was a shop on every corner and an endless array of flavors and toppings. I never thought the day would come when I could bring that joy home until I was introduced to the Ninja Swirl.
After testing the Ninja Creami, I got used to having homemade frozen dessert on command. So when Ninja reached out about the debut of its latest Creami device, the Ninja Swirl, which lets you make soft serve at home, I was all ears.
I got a sneak peek of the Ninja Swirl at the brand's event in early February, and it certainly got me hyped to bring it home. Now that I've tested it, here's what I think about the Ninja Swirl.

Place the pint on the left side of the machine, and you'll have fresh soft serve within seconds. Credit: Samantha Mangino / MashableThe Ninja Swirl builds off of the original Creami technology. Each Swirl comes with two pints to mix up your concoctions. Once filled, the pints must be frozen for 24 hours before you can "spin" them. You can think of the spinning process as a reverse blender. Instead of the blade sitting at the bottom, it comes down from the top, cutting and spinning through the ice cream until it's as creamy as what you buy from the store.
Each Creami has a variety of settings, including ice cream, lite ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, gelato, and milkshake. Plus, there are settings to re-spin if your mix is not the right texture or you want to add mix-ins.
The Swirl adds a new feature for dispensing soft serve. The pints that come with the Swirl all have a dispensing feature, which is utilized when you place them in the left-hand dispenser. Then, you pull the lever, and the machine pushes the ice cream out.
How is the Ninja Swirl different than the Creami? The most significant difference between the Swirl and the standard Creami is the ability to make soft serve. The regular and deluxe Ninja Creami produce scoopable ice cream or frozen drinks, and the Swirl can do all of that, plus make soft serve. Part of the soft serve process is the inclusion of a soft serve dispenser that feels like you're working at an ice cream shop, with a handle to pull and everything.
SEE ALSO: TikTok is in love with the Ninja Creami, but am I?The biggest difference between soft serve and regular ice cream is air. Soft serve adds more air to achieve a light and fluffy texture compared to denser ice cream. In standard ice cream making, air is added during the churning and freezing process; however, the Ninja Creami brings air into play during the spinning process.
The Ninja Swirl features a setting that adds more air to the product so it's ready to dispense as soft serve.
It's creamier than ever The Ninja Swirl (right) spins pints to creamy perfection compared to the standard Ninja Creami (left). Credit: Samantha Mangino / MashableWhen I was first introduced to the Ninja Swirl, I was intrigued by the brand's claim that this new device added more air to the spinning process to replicate classic soft serve or froyo. I was cautiously optimistic about this but still hesitant. My previous experience with the Ninja Creami was that getting the right texture, one that's genuinely creamy and easy to scoop, requires at least one re-spin, but often more.
So when I first used the Ninja Swirl, I wanted to try my go-to Creami recipe for chocolate hazelnut froyo. I mixed plain Greek yogurt with a chocolate hazelnut spread and let it freeze for over 24 hours. When it came time to spin the pint, my jaw was on the floor when, after one spin, it turned out to be the smoothest ice cream (pictured above, right) I'd ever seen from a Creami. Usually, getting anywhere near that consistency requires multiple spins, and even then, it's still a little too thick (pictured above, left).
Ninja has clearly improved the technology between models and has struck gold. The spinning process is more powerful than ever on the Ninja Swirl, regardless of whether you're making soft serve or scoopable ice cream.
You never have to leave the house for soft serve againThere's nothing I love more than leaving the house on a late summer evening to indulge in a cone of soft serve. It's something you can't get at home, unlike a pint of ice cream you buy at the grocery store. But now, with the Ninja Swirl, I don't have to leave the house for soft serve.
Using the Ninja Swirl's soft serve feature is impossibly easy. After spinning your pint on the soft serve setting, install the soft serve lid attachment and install the whole pint into the dispensing portion. Then, using the lever on the right side of the machine, release the ice cream.
Despite being non-dairy, the pineapple whip I made was exceptionally creamy. Credit: Samantha Mangino / MashableI tried a couple of different recipes for the soft serve mechanism, both dairy and non-dairy. The creamiest was, unsurprisingly, the dairy-based froyo, which dispensed evenly without any air pockets to disrupt the flow of dispensing. The fruit whip I made, an ode to a Dole whip, still faired pretty well in the machine. It looked really smooth and silky after spinning, so I had high hopes when I went to dispense it.
It had a less consistent flow than the dairy recipe I made. Ninja warns users that they might hear some popping during the soft serve dispensing, just air pockets getting pushed out. I definitely experienced quite a lot of popping with the fruit whip, which resulted in a less consistent flow. My swirls weren't as pretty as they were with the froyo, but the ice cream's texture was fine while eating it. It just might not look as Instagrammable as other recipes.
That being said, using the soft serve dispenser is just straight-up fun. Pulling the lever and swirling the ice cream feels like you're back in the froyo shop.
It's made for meal preppers and protein maxxersThe Ninja Creami became an internet sensation through creators in the health and fitness space. Users see the device as a way to enjoy ice cream while still hitting their daily macros. At the Ninja event I attended, the brand doubled down on the Swirl's spot in the health space, collaborating with health and fitness creator John Jung to highlight the new Creamifit setting.
Creamifit is designed to work best with recipes that include protein powders or shakes, which is a huge draw for users already tapping the Creami to make protein-focused desserts.
SEE ALSO: The best fitness trackers you can buy in 2025: From smartwatches to ringsI had an issue with the Creami in my first review: the pints require 24 hours of freezing before use, so it's not like you can just have some ice cream on a whim. That remains the case for the Ninja Swirl, so it's best fit for meal preppers who want to prep a few pints at the beginning of the week so they're ready to go when the mood strikes.
It isn't great for single servings — or a crowdThe only real drawback I've found to the Ninja Swirl's soft-serve feature is that it's not great for single servings or a crowd. At 16 oz, it's best used to produce four four-ounce servings. At the Ninja event, I noticed the Ninja team needed to swap out the pints after about four people served themselves. So, if you're planning on serving a crowd, prepare to have some backup pints ready.
If it's just you enjoying the soft serve, you'll have leftovers. The issue here is that the ice cream dispenses directly from the pint in which it's frozen. It gets pretty messy during dispensing, so it's not great to throw it back in the freezer like I would with the pints I used in the standard Creami.
That being the case, I found myself reaching for the Swirl a lot less during the week. When it's just me and my partner, we don't want to polish off a pint, just the two of us, and we don't want to deal with the messy leftover pint. So, I waited until we had a couple more people over before using the soft serve function.
If you want to enjoy the soft serve in single servings, I recommend having a clean pint on hand and moving your leftovers there after use.
It's still way too loud — and even bigger than beforeThe number one complaint you will hear about the Ninja Creami is its loudness. Imagine a powerful vacuum and then crank it up a couple of notches kind of loud. This makes it less than ideal for parents looking to sneak in a late-night snack when the kids are asleep, apartment dwellers sharing a wall with their neighbors, or pet owners. My cat seriously hates the Ninja Swirl, even if he begs me for the fruits of its labor.
Unfortunately, the Swirl is just as loud as the Creami, as you can hear from the video above. While it's a total pain hearing it go on for six minutes, it's an unavoidable part of the Swirl and Creami experience.
The Ninja Swirl takes up valuable counter space. Credit: Samantha Mangino / MashableBecause of the addition of the soft serve dispenser, the Ninja Swirl is a lot bigger than the Creami. As an apartment dweller with already limited counter space, I may not be able to justify making the Swirl a permanent fixture in my kitchen. However, if you have endless counter or storage space or just really love ice cream, making room for it is a worthy sacrifice.
Is the Ninja Swirl worth it? Should you indulge in soft serve at home? Credit: Samantha Mangino / MashableYes, the Ninja Swirl is worth it. Having tested both the standard Ninja Creami and the Ninja Swirl, the Swirl is the better investment as an ice cream maker. It has improved performance, requiring fewer re-spins to achieve a creamy consistency. Soft serve or froyo fiends will love the new dispensing feature, which is exceptionally easy to use and, not to mention, really fun.
There are certainly drawbacks, such as its size and how loud it is to use, but if you're prepared for both, there's no reason that it will inhibit your experience using it.
It will cost you $349.99; however, with the capability to make both soft serve and scoopable ice cream, it's the best-valued Creami device yet.
