Our top pick Opens in a new window Credit: Apple 15-inch MacBook Air (M3 chip, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $1,149.99 at Amazon
$1,299.00 Save $149.01 with on-page coupon Get Deal

We saw the price of the M3 MacBook Air drop to an all-time low $1,149.99 at Amazon last month with an on-page coupon. If you missed out the first time, you're in luck: As of June 7, that same deal is back in action. While it appears similar to the M2 Air on the outside, the new M3 model packs one helluva punch on the inside. Obviously, it features the zippier M3 chip, which is an impressive 60 percent faster than the M1 chip and about 15 percent faster than the M2 chip. Plus, it adds WiFi 6E and has support for up to two 5K, 60Hz external displays (when it's closed). Mashable's reviewer was highly impressed with its performance, writing, "The 15-inch M3 MacBook Air continues to blur the line of the Air and Pro models, providing ample “oomph” for creatives, professionals, and students who need robust performance that can handle their multifaceted workflows."

Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Mac Mini (M2 chip, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $479.00 at Amazon
$599.00 Save $120.00 Get Deal

At a glance, the M2 version of the Mac Mini is indistinguishable from its predecessors, but inside it ramps up the power under the aluminum unibody case. Notable features include an 8-core CPU with a new 10-core GPU (up from an 8-core GPU in 2020's M1 model), an improved headphone jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports for advanced peripherals. Plus, of course, the significantly faster M2 processor. It also supports two displays, which is a game-changer for work-from-homers. Usually $599 for the 8GB, 256GB SSD base model version, you can grab the Mac Mini for only $479 as of June 7. After sitting at $499 for a few months, it's finally back at its all-time low.

Whether you're someone who anxiously awaits the latest drops and upgrades or you care less about brands but value reliable devices, Apple likely has a place in your arsenal of tech. While we don't always love how pricey Apple products can be, they're worthwhile investments - that are also known to go on sale. This weekend, Best Buy has some of the best Apple deals thanks to its Apple Sales Event, which is running until Sunday, June 9.

Always competitive, Amazon is matching some of these prices, too. (In some cases, like that of the Mac Mini, Amazon is offering a better price.)

$1,599.00 Save $150.00 Get Deal Why we like it

Having a reliable laptop that can multitask well is important for students, professionals, and casual consumers of entertainment alike. With the Apple M3 processor and 8GB of RAM, this 14-inch MacBook Pro speedily moves from task to task without slowing down. While its 8GB RAM is helpful for users who edit photos and videos, it's still a mid-range laptop, meaning that if you're an extensive gamer or working on advanced video projects, you may want something more sophisticated. However, for typical use, the MacBook Pro (M3, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) does the job and does it well.

Best iPad deal Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Our pick: iPad Air (M1, 64GB, WiFi) $399.99 at Best Buy
$599.99 Save $200.00 Get Deal Why we like it

This Apple iPad Air (5th generation) might not be the newest model on the block, but it's still an impressive iPad down to a favorable price. Today, you can score the iPad Air (M1, WiFi, 64GB) for $399.99 at Best Buy, scoring $200 off Best Buy's list price. (Meanwhile, over at Amazon, the same device is on sale for $549.) Best Buy's deal is only here until Sunday, so we recommend taking action on it sooner rather than later if you're in the market. While this model doesn't have the increased storage of its new counterparts, it's a great option for folks who don't need as much storage and just want to enjoy a basic iPad.

Best AirPods deal Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Our pick: AirPods Max $449.99 at Best Buy
$549.99 Save $100.00 Get Deal Why we like it

Best Buy's Apple Sales Event has plenty of AirPods deals. While the classic earbuds are always a solid choice, today's promotion brings the pricey Apple AirPods Max down to a more approachable price of $449.99. (Amazon is also matching this price, too.) These high-fidelity, active noise-canceling over-ear headphones offer 20 hours of listening time and a comfortable design that makes them suitable for the long haul. If you love watching videos and movies on the go, these headphones offer great support: when streaming through supported apps, they provide you with a spatial audio experience of your favorite entertainment.

(Especially since today's sale puts $100 back in your wallet.) With the S9 chip, you can engage with your Apple Watch without even having to touch the screen, giving you a truly hands-free experience. With support from the Apple Watch S9, you can take your own ECG, receive notification if you have an irregular heartbeat, and collect data on the quality of sleep you're getting. Plus, with Fall Detection and Crash Detection features, your Apple Watch can call for help even when you can't.

Netflix is testing a new TV homepage design — here's what it could look like

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 11:53

Prepare for changes to your binging habits. Netflix could soon look a lot different on your TV.

The streaming giant is testing a homepage redesign for its TV app, The Verge reported. The changes are pretty substantial. Basically, if you select the tile for show or movie, it immediately expands. Then, if you hover over it long enough, the tile begins to play a preview of the title and display info about it, such as genre and number of episodes. This is a big change the current static tiles with a preview that displays at the top of the screen. The idea is to make it simpler to bop around the streaming service as you look for something to watch.

"We often see members doing gymnastics with their eyes as they're scanning the home experience," Pat Flemming, Netflix's senior director of product, told The Verge. "We really wanted members to have an easier time figuring out if a title is right for them."

Tweet may have been deleted What happens now?

The new-look TV app rolled out to a limited subset of customers starting Thursday, Reuters reported, noting the company planned to take feedback and potentially make changes before rolling it out more broadly.

"Think of this as a first effort, our best initial swing, at what we think is a great new TV experience," Flemming told The Verge.

The homepage redesign comes at an interesting time for the company. It's starting to dip its toes into live TV with offerings like John Mulaney's six-episode Everybody's in LA and David Chang's Dinner Time Live. And there's the massive news that Netflix purchased the rights to stream the NFL's Christmas games. It makes sense you'd want a user-friendly and well-tested homepage before airing the most popular TV product in the country.

‘Apple Intelligence’ may be the name of your iPhone’s new suite of AI features

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 11:32

WWDC 2024 is looming — and we now have a pretty good idea of what to expect during event, thanks to a new report from Bloomberg's Apple insider Mark Gurman

Gurman published a handy list of what we can anticipate from the artificial intelligence portion of Apple's upcoming software-focused keynote address. AI will reportedly take up roughly half of its runtime. More importantly, the general suite of AI features coming to iPhones, iPads, and Macs apparently has a name: Apple Intelligence.

SEE ALSO: Apple to launch Passwords, a dedicated password manager, report claims 'Apple Intelligence' features

Gurman also reported that Apple will partner with OpenAI for some kind of AI-powered chatbot. There wasn't much info about that in the report, but Gurman did give us the lowdown on many of the upcoming AI features, including:

  • AI recap summaries of articles and web pages in the Safari browser, as well as summaries of text messages, emails, and meeting notes

  • Suggested replies to text messages and emails

  • A revamped Siri that can do things like delete individual emails or edit photos based on voice commands

  • AI-generated emoji

  • Automatic transcription of voice notes

Per Gurman, these features will require at least an iPhone 15 Pro (or newer) or an iPad or Mac with at least an M1 chip inside of it. These features will also be opt-in, initially labeled as a beta test — and will use a combination of cloud processing and on-device processing.

Some of these features will surely be a boon to everyday productivity, while others may not. Either way, Apple is chasing the likes of Google in this regard; AI-powered website summaries, voice transcription, and photo editing are already available on Pixel phones.

'Adobe does not train Firefly Gen AI models on customer content': Company responds to backlash

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 11:10

Adobe has clarified its Terms of Use update, which initially led users to believe their unpublished work was fodder for AI training.

Adobe says it does not train its Firefly generative AI models on user content and that it "will never assume ownership of a customer's work."

Backlash snowballed this week after Adobe users were notified of an update to its Terms of Use policy. The language that caught people's attention was a sentence in Section 2.2 that said "Our automated systems may analyze your Content and Creative Cloud Customer Fonts (defined in section 3.10 (Creative Cloud Customer Fonts) below) using techniques such as machine learning in order to improve our Services and Software and the user experience."

Tweet may have been deleted

Adobe clarified in a blog post that this part of the policy was not new, and refers specifically to moderating illegal content, such as child sexual abuse material or content that violates its terms, like the creation of spam or phishing attempts. "Given the explosion of Generative AI and our commitment to responsible innovation, we have added more human moderation to our content submissions review processes," said the blog post. So more human moderation has been added, not more automated moderation.

But because Adobe did not specify exactly what had been updated in the Terms, users assumed this section meant unpublished work, including confidential content, could be used to train its AI models. "Our commitments to our customers have not changed," said the blog post. Adobe explained that its Firefly models are trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public domain content. Adobe also asserted that its users own the work they create on its apps.

Tweet may have been deleted What exactly did Adobe update in its Terms of Service?

In the blog post, the company highlighted in pink text where language had been changed. In the privacy section, instead of "'will only'" access," the text was changed to "'may' access, view, or listen to your Content" and added the line "'through both automated and manual methods, but only' in limited ways..." Later on in the paragraph, Adobe added the line "as further set forth in Section 4.1 below." Section 4.1 is where details of illegal or banned content is outlined. This paragraph also added, "including manual review" which refers to methods employed for screening Adobe's content. The section also changed "child 'pornography'" to "child 'sexual abuse material.'"

So nothing has substantially changed in Adobe's privacy policy, which may come as a relief to users who rely on it for their creative pursuits. However, the reaction to Adobe's vaguely-worded update is an indication of the fear and mistrust creatives feel as generative AI threatens to upend their professions. AI models like ChatGPT, Dall-E, Gemini, Copilot, and Midjourney have come under fire for being trained on content scraped from the web that in turn automates writing and image creation. Then there's OpenAI's Sora, which has not been publicly released, but is believed to be trained on videos from YouTube and elsewhere.

All in all, it's a tense time for creatives and there's a reason why they're wary of changes that may threaten their livelihood.

TikTok may be introducing Snapchat-like streaks in DMs

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 07:27

TikTok appears to be taking a cue from Snapchat, now testing streaks in direct messages for some users.

The platform confirmed it is playing around with streaks to select users in limited markets, according to TechCrunch.

SEE ALSO: Watch out, some TikTok celeb accounts have been hacked

The streak badge, akin to Snapchat, will appear if you exchange DMs with another user for three days or more. Streaks will then pop up next to that person's name in your message tab. TikTok is also sending notifications to users to keep up their streaks, which will end if a response isn't exchanged within 24 hours.

Some users have posted about the feature on X, formally Twitter – and most seem confused about why exactly they're being introduced.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

The point of streaks, we assume, is to keep engagement going, and perhaps introduce a more interactive element for TikTok users during their endless scroll on the app.

TikTok is also reportedly in the midst of testing hour-long video uploads, signalling a walk in YouTube territory, too.

Hulk Hogan warns followers about crypto token, implies he was hacked

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 06:43

Just because you see a celebrity posting about a new crypto token, it doesn't mean it's going to make you money — or that it's even really them.

That seems to be the takeaway from $HULK, a new crypto memecoin that was launched on Thursday night and promoted by Hulk Hogan's official X (formerly Twitter) account. The coin pumped in value before quickly dumping after rumours of a hack began to circulate.

SEE ALSO: How to report crypto transactions on your taxes

Within a few hours, all the posts promoting $HULK were deleted, as Mashable's Matt Binder shared on X.

Meanwhile, Hogan took to Instagram to warn followers that the posts weren't from him.

"Please do not take notice of any posts posted today," reads the message. "They are not from me and will be promptly removed."

Celebrity memecoins have been on the rise recently. The likes of Caitlyn Jenner and Trippie Redd have both recently launched their own tokens, while Iggy Azalea's $MOTHER token has continued to rise in value as the rapper consistently posts about it on her social media channels.

It's worth noting that, like much of the cryptocurrency space, these tokens are incredibly volatile. Many have quickly risen in value when they're first posted about only to lose value at an even faster rate when the celebrity in question either stops posting, or a new token pops up and attention moves elsewhere.

World No. 1 and defending Roland-Garros champion Novak Djokovic was put out of the tournament with a knee injury this week. It really shook things up at the 2024 French Open. But can today's semi-finalist opponents, either Casper Ruud or Alexander Zverev, take advantage and go all the way?

Zverev, the German No. 4 seed, defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets to earn this semi-final spot. Rudd meanwhile benefitted most from Djokovic's injury. After beating Taylor Fitz in the fourth round, the Norwegian No. 7 seed was supposed to face Djokovic, but got a walkover to the semis.

It might seem like Zverev has arguably shown more skill to get here, that doesn't mean he's a shoo-in for the win. Ruud is better rested and actually beat Zverev in the semi-final at last year's Roland-Garros. Will history repeat itself?

With defending Roland-Garros champion Novak Djokovic out of the picture, we're guaranteed a new title winner this weekend. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are the hot favorites, as the respective No. 3 and No. 2 seeds.

Italian youngster Sinner has already captured the Australian Open title this season. He's surely hopeful of taking the French Open and challenging for both Wimbledon and the US Open for the full Grand Slam.

Alcaraz won't let Sinner waltz past though. Alcaraz won last year's Wimbledon and he's looking to prove himself after a disappointing quarter final exit in Australia.

Does Tinder notify users when you take a screenshot?

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 06:16

These days, it's pretty much known that dating app messages are fair game when it comes to screenshotting and sharing, either with friends or followers. But does the dating app Tinder notify matches when you screenshot on the app?

Does Tinder show screenshots?

No, Tinder doesn't notify someone if another user screenshots their profile or message. That doesn't mean you should, however. If your match is acting inappropriately, Tinder has reporting features in place for harmful messages. Otherwise, be mindful of screenshotting on Tinder and other dating apps. These exchanges are meant to be private — and sure, it might be easy to boost engagement by sharing these DMs, but your match sent them to be only read by you.

What is Cara, the anti-AI social media app for artists?

Mashable - Fri, 06/07/2024 - 05:00

There was a time immediately after Elon Musk took over Twitter when it felt like app developers were launching new social media sites every week. It was exhausting. We all got very overwhelmed, and none of the latest sites stuck around with mass appeal. Do you even remember Artifact or Lemon8?

Thankfully, the bombardment of social media sites has slowed. And now, when a new platform rises, it's almost, dare I say, interesting. That's precisely how I feel about Cara, a new social media site available on mobile and desktop that describes itself as "a social media and portfolio platform for artists."

It looks like a combination of all the other social media apps out there but focused on artists. You can do X-like microblogging and post your portfolio on a grid, like Instagram. Similar to LinkedIn, there's a job tab for artists looking to get hired — or folks looking to hire artists. Like X, it appears that likes are public. And the Explore page looks a bit like a Tumblr dashboard. But unlike X and Meta-owned platforms, users can customize their home feed according to how many posts they'd like to see from the general public and their network, Fast Company reported.

The biggest catch? It's a haven for creatives from AI, which has become a big problem for artists on Meta-owned platforms as Meta uses public posts to train its generative AI systems, which isn't great for artists who fear their work is getting stolen or devalued by these systems.

Plenty of social media platforms feel like solutions that are looking for a problem, which can be annoying. On the other hand, Cara appears to be a solution to a particular problem: how generative AI affects artists and creators. The site's website says it "filters out generative AI images" to make it easier for people to find creatives and artwork created by humans — and remove some of the ethical and moral issues tied to AI policies.

"Many platforms currently accept AI art when it’s not ethical, while others have promised 'no AI forever' policies without consideration for the scenario where adoption of such technologies may happen at the workplace in the coming years," the site reads.

Cara's stance on AI is that it doesn't "agree with generative AI tools in their current unethical form" and will not host AI-generated work.

"The future of creative industries requires nuanced understanding and support to help artists and companies connect and work together. We want to bridge the gap and build a platform that we would enjoy using as creatives ourselves," the site adds.

According to Tech Crunch, Cara is still in beta, but that hasn't stopped it from climbing to the top of the App Store charts and encouraging 650,000 people to download it.
