Mashable - Wed, 06/05/2024 - 21:00

Connections is the latest New York Times word game that's captured the public's attention. The game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for June 5's Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections?

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Tweet may have been deleted

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Tweet may have been deleted

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Here's a hint for today's Connections categories

Want a hit about the categories without being told the categories? Then give these a try:

  • Yellow: Inspire to do something

'Disaster': Ex-Microsoft security expert torches Windows' new 'Recall' feature

Mashable - Wed, 06/05/2024 - 18:16

Microsoft's new Copilot+ AI-powered computer history saving feature, Recall, was already being likened to one of the many fictional dystopian tech products found in episodes of Black Mirror on the very day it was announced last month.

Now that Recall is in the hands of cybersecurity experts, the reaction to the new Microsoft feature is somehow even worse than what critics imagined.

"Stealing everything you’ve ever typed or viewed on your own Windows PC is now possible with two lines of code," wrote cybersecurity expert Kevin Beaumont, who formerly worked at Microsoft as a Senior Threat Intelligence Analyst, in a new hands-on review of Recall, in which he declares the product a "disaster."

Microsoft's Recall is apparently riddled with security flaws that make a user's entire computer history, including passwords and other sensitive information, openly available to bad actors.

SEE ALSO: Microsoft being investigated over new ‘Recall’ AI feature that tracks your every PC move What is Microsoft's Copilot+ Recall"

For those unaware, Microsoft recently unveiled Recall, a new AI feature built into its Windows operating system. Recall essentially takes constant screenshots in the background while a user goes about their daily computer usage. Microsoft's Copilot+ AI then scans each of these screenshots in order to make a searchable database of every action performed on their computer.

Recall is kind of like a web browser's web history on steroids as users would not only be able to search for a website they previously visited, but they could also search for a very specific thing that they read or saw on that web page. And, of course, those capabilities are expanded beyond a user's browser history and contain every action they've performed on their computer.

After the announcement, cybersecurity experts immediately shared their issues with the feature, especially after Microsoft confirmed two concerning aspects of Recall: that Recall is on by default, and that passwords and other sensitive information aren't exempt from Recall's history database.

Based on the information that was out there, the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) even announced an investigation into Recall's security issues too.

Microsoft Recall gets torched

Beaumont shared numerous issues with Recall from a cybersecurity perspective after getting hands on with the feature and how it worked.

His findings very much back up critics' concerns, and flesh out his overall description of Recall as a "disaster."

Recall saves nearly everything

Beaumont found that Recall indeed saves a history of almost everything a user has ever seen on their computer. There are some exceptions Beaumont found such as Microsoft Edge's history when in private mode isn't saved by Recall. However, Google Chrome history when in private mode is saved. Every action, even something as small as minimizing a window, is included in Recall. Full text passwords, financial details, and other sensitive data are also saved.

Recall also saves deleted data. According to Beaumont, Recall will save emails and messages from apps like WhatsApp and keep them, even if the emails and messages are deleted. Furthermore, auto-deleting content like Signal messages are also scraped and saved in Recall's history database.

As Beaumont points out, Recall organizes everything in its database by Application. It's a hacker's dream as they can just steal all your sensitive data in one central location and also know exactly what sensitive information is connected to which apps.

Microsoft is wrong about Recall's security

In using Recall, Beaumont found that Microsoft has been spreading inaccurate information about Recall's security.

For one, Microsoft has been claiming that Recall's history is encrypted. This means that if a thief were to run off with a user's physical computer, they wouldn't be able to steal the data saved by Recall. However, that's only true if the thief couldn't access the computer at all.

As Beaumont explains, once a user logs into their computer, the encrypted data becomes decrypted so that they can access it. All a hacker needs to do is gain remote access to a user's device, via a trojan horse virus for example, and then they would have access to the computer's Recall history.

"In fact, you don’t even need to be an admin to read the database," Beaumont explained.

Netflix is ending support for older Apple TV models

Mashable - Wed, 06/05/2024 - 15:50

Netflix has announced that it will discontinue support for older Apple TV models starting July 31. The streaming giant cited the need to "maintain the best possible Netflix experience" for devices capable of supporting the latest features and updates, according to Mac Rumors.

SEE ALSO: How to cancel your Netflix account

The models affected are the second- and third-gen Apple TVs. Because both models ran on an early version of iOS that predates tvOS and lacks an App Store, Apple classified the devices as obsolete. Consequently, they no longer receive updates.

The former device was released in 2010 and is powered by an A4 chip and offers up to 720p resolution. Apple sold this model until 2012, when it was replaced by the third-generation Apple TV, featuring an A5 chip and 1080p support.

The news of Netflix discontinuing support for older Apple TV devices comes months after reports told us to expect another series of price increases in 2024. The streaming service last raised prices in October 2023, increasing the basic plan from $9.99 to $11.99.

Netflix will remain accessible on the Apple TV HD (fourth-gen model) and Apple TV 4K models. Outside of upgrading to a new Apple TV device, Netflix recommends switching to compatible smart TVs or Roku devices.

Your Google Maps' ‘Timeline' data may soon be deleted on the web. Here's how to save it.

Mashable - Wed, 06/05/2024 - 14:40

Google Maps' Timeline feature is getting a significant update to enhance user privacy.

SEE ALSO: Leaked Google database affects cars caught on Google Maps, children's privacy, and more

Normally, Timeline has tracked users’ movements and made this data accessible on both the web and in the app. Now, Google Maps is shifting to a more secure, on-device system.

According to Android Police, the new approach will discontinue web access to Timeline, meaning your location data will no longer sync across devices. Instead, it will be stored only on your phone.

How to save Timeline data

Once your account is set for transition, expect an email and push notification from Google Maps. You’ll be prompted to migrate your existing location history to your device via an updated app button. If you don’t take action by the given deadline, Google might delete some or all of your Timeline data as it phases out the web feature.

Google Maps will also introduce backup options to ensure you don't lose your data. So if you're worried, you can save encrypted copies of your location history on Google’s servers, which you can later restore when switching to a new phone.

Google appears to be rolling out the change gradually, with some users’ deadlines set for December 1, 2024. While the date for everyone is unclear, you’ll receive ample notice before any data is deleted, so if you haven’t heard from Google yet, it's still business as usual.

Surprise! It seems that the Apple Vision Pro can track your breathing

Mashable - Wed, 06/05/2024 - 14:32

World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC 2024) is just days away, so the conversation around what Apple has planned for the big event is really starting to ramp up. What will Apple have in store for everyone?

Well, here's something that seems likely, based on a new report from MacRumors: A respiratory tracking feature in the Apple Vision Pro's Mindfulness app.

How would Apple's AR/VR headset pull off a respiratory tracking feature? Apparently, based on newly discovered back-end code, the Apple Vision Pro can track a user's breathing.

An Apple Vision Pro discovery

According to MacRumors, its contributor Aaron Perris discovered lines of code in the Apple Vision Pro's Mindfulness app, which provides users with meditation guides and sessions. The app draws the user's focus to their breathing rate, so it appears this possibly upcoming feature could be related to that.

As MacRumors points out, the Apple Vision Pro's ability to track breathing has never been disclosed before. However, we should note, it's unclear if Apple's AR/VR headset can currently do this, or if this code is connected to an upcoming update or something else entirely.

The Apple Watch can currently track a wearer's respiratory rate thanks to its built-in accelerometer. The Apple Vision Pro also has an accelerometer built in to the hardware.

Apple is expected to announce the next Apple Vision Pro operating system, visionOS 2,  at WWDC. There's no word yet on whether a respiratory tracking feature will be included in any Apple Vision Pro–related announcements. However, the discovery of this code is interesting nonetheless, as it shows that plans for such capabilities may very well be on the horizon.

Apple has struggled with Vision Pro sales as of late, with the company apparently revising its shipment expectations for the year. This new feature likely won't move units off of store shelves on its own. But, let's see what else Apple has in store for the headset at WWDC.

iPhone 16 Pro Max dimensions have leaked, revealing a 'sci-fi form factor'

Mashable - Wed, 06/05/2024 - 13:55

Hey, there's a fresh new iPhone 16 rumor.

This one's not seismic nor mind-blowing by any means, but it's something. Reputable tech leaker Ice Universe took to X to post leaked dimensions of the iPhone 16 Pro Max on Wednesday. The revelations here aren't going to sell you a new iPhone on their own, but they're worth knowing, at least.

SEE ALSO: iPhone 16 Pro will break a world record with this new feature, according to new reports Tweet may have been deleted Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max dimensions

According to the leak, the iPhone 16 Pro Max measures 163.024mm × 77.575mm × 8.26mm. Those dimensions, per Apple Insider, are all bigger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max; the new one is 3.1mm taller, 0.88mm wider, and 1mm thicker. The reason for that is the rumored new screen size of 6.9-inches, beating out the 6.7-inch display on last year's model.

For better readability, here is an easy-to-read comparison of the iPhone 16 Pro Max's dimensions and its predecessor:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max - 76.7 × 159.9 × 8.25 mm (3.02 inches wide, 6.29 inches tall, 0.32 inches thick)

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max - 77.5 x 163 x 8.26mm (3.05 inches wide, 6.41 inches tall, 0.33 inches thick)

Aside from that, Ice Universe claims the new iPhone 16 Pro Max will have "the world's closest smartphone to a borderless sci-fi form factor." The bezel reportedly comes in at 1.153mm around all four borders of the phone. As we reported, if this rumor is true, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is poised to break a world record.

So, the new phone is a little bit bigger, but the bezels are smaller. Hopefully it actually, you know, can do some cool stuff, too.

Is the Apple HomePod mini the latest smart speaker on the market? Not exactly. It came out in 2020, but when we compared it tothe the second-generation HomePod last year, we found that the mini offered a better value. That statement is even more true with a deal at Verizon today, as you can pick up two Apple HomePod minis in a buy one, get one half off promo.

As of June 5, you can buy one Apple HomePod mini and get one half off at Verizon for $148.50. One HomePod will typically run you $99 at full price, so this deal saves you a total of $49.50 off the typical price of $198 for two HomePod minis.

Other than the cash saved, getting two HomePod minis is a great option for anyone who wants to take advantage of the stereo sound when you pair two together. While Mashable's Stan Schroeder didn't think the limited hardware on this tiny speaker offered the most clarity, especially with bass-heavy music, he did find that it does have impressive sound mixing, which made genres like rock sound similar to the larger HomePod speaker.

As for the smart capabilities, the HomePod mini of course runs Siri, and integrates seamlessly with the other Apple devices in your home. It has four mics for listening that do the job, as well as an accelerometer, humidity, and temperature sensors. Plus, it can work alongside any other smart home tech compatible with Apple's Home app.

You can grab the HomePod mini on sale in the white, yellow, orange, and blue colorways for a limited time.

Thinking about getting some takeout tonight? Have it delivered straight to your home with DoorDash — and get some extra value out of it with DoorDash eGift Cards on sale at Costco right now.

As of June 5, get two $50 DoorDash eGift Cards (a value of $100) for just $79.99. That's a 20% discount. They're delivered digitally via email, and there's a limit of one transaction per Costco membership. That means you must have a membership to take part in the deal, and you'll only be able to purchase a single discounted pair. Once you receive your gift cards, you can redeem them via the DoorDash app or on DoorDash.com.

SEE ALSO: Amazon Prime members can order Grubhub delivery right from the app. Here's how it works.

DoorDash has plenty of different types of cuisine on offer, but, of course, the food on offer depends on where you live. You can find restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and even big box stores to shop from when you need something in a pinch. Keep in mind that, in many cases, you'll pay extra fees to have your food or items delivered.

The app's DashPass subscription can alleviate some of these fees, and you can try out a free 30-day trial; just be sure to cancel before your subscription renews to avoid being charged. You can also try to use one of the DoorDash promo codes we collected (these codes actually work, but many of them are for new users and are location-dependent).

Still, this is a great deal where saving that extra 20% could help you put an awesome meal on the table tonight. Saving money and enjoying a delicious meal is one of our favorite combos.

$349.99 Save $60.00 Get Deal

Launched in October 2023, the Google Pixel Watch 2 delivered some essential upgrades. It looks pretty similar to the OG Pixel Watch, but inside it packs better battery life (up to 24 hours), automatic workout detection, a new body-response sensor and skin temperature sensor to help monitor and manage stress, extra fitness features, safety tech additions, and more. Though its $349.99 price tag is more expensive than we'd prefer, you can snag it at Amazon as of June 5 for only $289.99 — that's $60 in savings and its lowest price on record. That also beats last month's discount by $10.

Traveling this summer? Grab the Tile Mate to help you keep track of your luggage. One of our top picks for a Bluetooth tracker, the Tile Mate attaches to your luggage (or keys, wallet, purse, etc.) and allows you to keep track of where it goes via GPS (with both iOS and Android devices). It can slip into small spaces without adding any bulk, thanks to its ultra-thin design. Plus, if you opt for the paid Tile Premium subscription, you can unlock even more features, like notifications when you leave stuff behind and reimbursements for items you can't recover. As of June 5, the white option is on sale for just $17.99 at Amazon — that's 28% in savings and just $2 away from its all-time low.

In a blind test, even iPhone loyalists had a hard time deciding between the photos taken on the Google Pixel 8 Pro's camera and their beloved Apple devices. And its camera isn't all it has going for it. The Pixel 8 Pro also features a brighter Super Actua display, a fancy new chipset, a new temperature sensor, a bigger ultrawide lens, an additional telephoto lens, some new AI features to play with, and a polished aluminum frame with a matte glass back. Even as an iPhone user, I can see why it's so popular. As of June 5, you can grab an unlocked, 256GB model for only $809 at Amazon. That's 24% in savings and matches its all-time low.

$49.99 Save $25.00 Get Deal

Essentially a kid-focused version of the Echo Pop, the Echo Pop Kids offers a similarly fun and affordable speaker with age-appropriate content, stories, audiobooks, and music for your little ones. The one downside is that it only comes in Disney-licensed designs, but it more than makes up for that with other features, like the silicone bumper to protect it from accidents and a six-month subscription to Amazon Kids+. Our friends at PCMag (which is owned by Mashable's publisher, Ziff Davis) dubbed it "Amazon's top smart speaker for children" and gave it the PCMag Editor's Choice honor. As of June 5, you can snag it on sale at Amazon for just $24.99 instead of the usual $49.99 — that's 50% off and just $2 shy of its all-time low.
