Top 5 CES 2025 announcements I cant wait to see

Mashable - Fri, 01/03/2025 - 05:51

CES 2025 officially kicks off in a couple of days (January 7, to be exact), and we know one word will surely be at the center of this year's event: AI.

Being a gadget geek at heart, though, I'm somehow more excited about..well, actual, physical gadgets, and this being CES, we'll probably see a few really cool ones this year (AI-powered or not).

With the biggest announcements just a few days away, we already have a pretty good idea of what's coming, even though most of the news is under embargo. So here's some of the stuff I'm most eager to see at CES this year.

Honda's EVs Cue dreamy saxophone solo. Credit: Honda

The Consumer Electronic Show is not by definition a car event, but car manufacturers often do use it to show off the tech in their new and upcoming vehicles. This year, a few of the big manufacturers are skipping the show, but Honda is going all in, with a number of announcements lined up for CES.

The company already announced it will premiere new 0 Series prototype models on January 7. These are follow-ups to the 0 Series prototypes we've seen at CES 2024, and this year we'll hopefully see updated designs that are closer to finalized, mass-market versions of these cars. The company will also show off a new vehicle operating system that will be running in the 0 Series cars, and we should find out more about Honda's new automated driving tech.

We should also learn the pre-order details on Sony AFEELA at CES 2025. Credit: Sony

That's not all from Honda, though. The company recently teamed up with Sony to build an electric vehicle called AFEELA, and the two companies will show off the latest AFEELA tech at CES, on January 7.

4K and 5K OLED monitors

Sure, OLED monitors have been a thing for a while. They bring rich blacks, incredibly fast pixel response, and massive dynamic range. But it still feels like they're not quite there yet, especially when it comes to gaming, as they don't come in all sizes and resolutions as their LCD brethren.

It bends! Credit: LG

This changes now. Manufacturers including Samsung, Asus, and MSI have announced 27-inch, 4K OLED monitors with 240Hz refresh rates (these are all based on Samsung's QD-OLED panels). And LG will launch new OLED models at CES as well, including a futuristic, bendable 45-inch display with a 5K resolution.

CES in general is the premier event for monitors and TVs of all shapes and sizes, and we definitely expect to see a few surprises, especially from heavyweights such as Samsung and LG. Last year, LG brought a transparent OLED TV to the show, and it was one of the most exciting gadgets we've seen at CES 2024.

Lenovo Legion GO S and GO 2

This is far from a given, but Lenovo is rumored to bring new Lenovo Legion GO gaming handhelds to CES 2025.

This guy is reportedly getting a successor (or three) at CES 2025. Credit: Lenovo

The original Lenovo Legion GO was launched in September 2023, and it was a pretty capable competitor to the likes of Nintendo Switch and Valve's Steam Deck, in particular because of its beautiful, 8.8-inch display.

Now, Lenovo is rumored to follow up with a more affordable model, the Lenovo Legion GO S, and (possibly) an upgraded version of the original handheld, the Lenovo Legion GO 2. A third handheld, the Lenovo Legion GO S Steam Edition, is rumored to arrive with Steam Deck's SteamOS instead of Windows.

The Lenovo GO S will reportedly come with an 8-inch, 1,920 x 1,200 pixel LED, as well as an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip. The Lenovo GO 2 should have the more powerful, AMD Z2 Extreme chip, and a slightly larger, 8.8-inch OLED display with a 2,560 x 1,600 pixel resolution.

Nvidia's new graphics cards

Nvidia's founder and CEO Jensen Huang is holding the central keynote at CES this year, and the company is widely expected to launch a bevy of new graphics cards, including new RTX 50 series GPUs.

Tweet may have been deleted

If you're not a gamer (I haven't been one for a while either), you may not care much about gaming hardware. But Nvidia's major graphics cards launches are always huge news, not only because they'll power the beautiful-looking, next-gen games, but because they (typically) set the benchmark for what a graphics card for personal use can do.

Rumors claim the RTX 5090 will offer a 50% performance increase compared to RTX 4090, which is currently the most powerful graphics card you can buy for your PC. If true, this will not only unleash next-level gaming performance, but also pave the way for new AI and scientific applications.

This weird 'emotional-support AI robot' Still can't do the dishes, eh? Credit: Mixi

A company called Mixi is about to show the Romi Lacatan, a cute gadget described as a "palmtop, emotional-support AI robot." Apparently, the little guy can hold a complex conversation in real time, remembering what you've previously said. It goes beyond just talking; the robot will also have gestures (meaning physical rattles and turns" and facial expressions (on the built-in LCD display). Still doesn't sound very robot-y, but it certainly could be one of those gadgets that steal the spotlight at CES.

CES 2025: Mashables guide on what to expect

Mashable - Fri, 01/03/2025 - 05:36

More than 100,000 people are expected to make their annual trek to Las Vegas in January – and no they're not taking the trip to gamble (mostly).

We're, of course, talking about the Consumer Electronics Show, better known as CES. The annual trade show is the largest technology conference of its kind. Every January, some of the biggest and some of the newest tech companies and startups show up to show off their latest products as well as prototypes for potential future technologies.

And CES 2025 will be no exception. So, what should you expect to come out of this CES. Mashable takes a look at some of the latest news, rumors, and announcements to give you a sneak peek at what's likely to be the main events of CES.

New TVs

Televisions are always a showstopper at CES and CES 2025 will likely continue that streak. We'll likely see plenty of new Smart TVs touting AI-integration.

But, alongside announcements regarding new TV consumer products, will be the real headline-stealers that you likely won't find in-stores anytime soon.

LG, for example, is already promoting its "World Premiere press conference" at CES on Jan. 6, the day before the show floor opens to the public. It's very possible that they are going to announce a brand new TV product that attendees will be able to experience in-person the very next day. Just last month, LG announced a new stretchable display, the first that's able to expand by 50 percent – from a 12-inch display to an 18-inch one – that LG might have that at the event.

LG stole the show at least year's CES with it's world's first 4K wireless transparent TV. It'll be interesting to see what they have in the works for this year's event.

HDMI 2.2

Along with brighter OLED displays and more affordable Mini-LED options, there's another big TV announcement likely coming to CES: HDMI 2.2.

HDMI Forum will announce a "new HDMI specification release" at CES 2025. It's expected to be HDMI 2.2, which will bring higher resolutions and refresh rates to your TV set. While there have been some minor updates, the latest major release was HDMI 2.1 in 2017. TV technology has certainly improved since then, so HDMI 2.2 will be much-talked about at CES.

AI wearables

There's no doubt about it: AI will be the big buzz word out of CES this year. And it won't just be in TVs. Artificial intelligence products, led by industry leader OpenAI and its hit ChatGPT, will be everywhere at CES and ingrained in every product category imaginable.

For example, at last year's CES, Mashable was able to get hands-on with multiple smartglass products from companies like TCL and XReal. Conversational AI, AI-powered translations, and chatbots could be found in nearly every smartglass wearable that was demoed at the 2024 event.

Yes, some big AI wearable launches have been major flops over the past year, but the AI space as a whole has only grown since then, so expect even more AI-related products looking to improve in areas where others failed at CES.

Next-generation laptops

Speaking of AI, don't be surprised to see new laptop models from basically every PC brand to integrate AI in some way.

In fact, if you want a look into what to expect at CES, just look at what the newest Innovation Award honorees showcase. Yes, CES has already issued awards for 2025. And award-winning laptops like the HP OmniBook 14" Ultra Flip and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition are both winners that highlight AI capabilities. So, look forward to plenty of new laptops accentuating their AI capabilities and Microsoft Copilot integrations.

As always, expect a few next generation laptops that introduce something new to the space. For example, one 2025 Innovation Award winner to keep an eye out for is the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid. There are plenty of tablets out there that you can connect a keyboard accessory to and touch-screen laptops are also a growing market as well. So what's unique about this? Well, for one, the "hybrid" part of this laptop isn't that it's a laptop and tablet. The innovative aspect here is  that the computer is both a Windows and Android device.

Gaming computers and laptops should also make their mark at this year's CES for a very specific reason, which brings me to the next likely big CES 2025 announcement.

Nvidia RTX 50-series

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is delivering a keynote at CES 2025 and rumors are spreading that the company is planning to use the big event to launch its latest GPUs, specifically the GeForce RTX 5090.

Nvidia's products have been very successful and in-demand thanks to AI. But, don't forget that gamers have been a reliable consumer base for the company too. The Nvidia RTX 50-series will be the first powered by the company's new powerful Blackwell architecture.

At the point, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 is expected to be the big announcement as part of Huang CES keynote on Jan. 6, 2025. So, while CES officially starts on Jan. 7, it seems the party will get started a day before the show floor opens to the public.

Gaming monitors

Like we said, TVs are usually a big hit at CES. However, this year, partly thanks to GPU innovations like the previously mentioned Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, CES 2025 will likely be a big event for gaming monitors too.

Computer gamers will have a lot to look forward to as LG just unveiled the first bendable 5K2K gaming monitor. The LG UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor is a 45", 21:9 monitor with an insane 5K2K, or 5,120 x 2,160, resolution. The screen can be flat monitor or bent with up to a 900R curvature, depending on the user's preference.

To show just how competitive the gaming monitor space will be at CES 2025, three companies – Samsung, Asus, and MSI – just announced 27" 4K OLED 240Hz gaming monitors ahead of the big show with each claiming to be the "world's first."

AI appliances

Home items like refrigerators may not seem exciting, but the innovations displayed at CES always leave attendees with at least one thing they'd never expect to find in their appliances.

Samsung, for example, has already shared the theme for its CES 2025: "AI for All: Everyday, Everywhere." Brand new AI and touch screen-enhanced home appliances will be showcased by the company. Samsung has already announced that it's new fridges with AI Hybrid Cooling technology that can anticipate temperature changes from everyday use and adjust accordingly will be featured at the event. In addition to that, Samsung will have its Bespoke Wall Oven with an AI-powered recipe feature on display. Samsung's Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer will also debut, showing off its wash cycle and energy monitoring capabilities.

An interesting CES for EVs

Electric vehicles always steal at least some of the headlines at CES. Aptera Motors, for example, is going to debut its solar-powered EV at CES 2025.

But, the conversation around EVs at CES will likely be something that can't be showcased: The incoming Trump administration's hostile policies regarding electric vehicles. Trump will likely look to end the EV tax credits, which would hurt many EV companies, especially startup EV manufacturers like the ones that attend CES. Combine that with a global slowdown of EV sales in general and the EV news coming out of this CES may not be all about what new technology was unveiled, but who isn't there this year.

Toyota's Woven City

While some automative companies may be sitting out CES 2025, that just means others will steal the spotlight.

Toyota, for example, has already published a CES 2025 teaser video called "Welcome to Woven City." The company seems poised to share some major progress with its "living laboratory" fully-connected prototype city powered by hydrogen cells.

CES 2025 in Las Vegas opens to the public on Jan. 7. Mashable will be there live at the show floor and at the media days before the public opening covering all the latest news from the event.

UPDATE: Jan. 2, 2025, 1:35 p.m. EST This piece was updated to include the latest news on what to expect at CES 2025.

The Substance is the perfect movie to kick off 2025

Mashable - Fri, 01/03/2025 - 05:00

Have you tried The Substance? This bloody and bonkers horror-comedy from French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (Revenge) has gone from one of the buzziest titles out of 2024's Cannes Film Festival to one of the most polarizing movies of the year, beloved by some and hated by others. (That didn't keep it off our Best Films of 2024 list!) But its reputation doesn't matter in this moment.

Whether or not you like or loathed The Substance, it's a sublime pick for kicking off a new year and a new you. Not only does this gnarly movie's climax fittingly involve its heroine's big night as the hostess of a New Year's Eve spectacular, but also her journey of self-loathing to self-acceptance is ultimately weirdly inspiring.

Hear me out. And yeah, spoilers ahead.

The Substance gruesomely probes damaging beauty standards. Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle in "The Substance." Credit: MUBI

Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a Hollywood actress who has a star on the Walk of Fame, an Oscar nomination in her filmography, and a long-running workout show on TV. But as Elisabeth turns 50, youth-obsessed L.A. turns on her hard. Not only does the heartless producer, Harvey (a shellfish-guzzling Dennis Quaid), fire her for daring to age, but he also puts out a want ad for a younger model who shares her sparkle. Note: As a man, Harvey gets to be old, repulsive (in his manner of eating and speaking), and seen in various gaudy suits.

By casting Moore as Elisabeth, Fargeat gives an instant metatextual tweak to The Substance. This American actress has been a sex symbol for decades, proudly displaying her body in movies like Indecent Proposal and Striptease, as well as that truly iconic pregnancy photo by Annie Leibovitz, which graced the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991. But as women mature, we are urged by a society repulsed by aging to hide ourselves away (hide our sparkle) or transform ourselves into cosmetic reimaginings of youth. Moore explores this trap by doing both through Elisabeth's story.

In The Substance, Moore displays her own aging body frankly, as her character stares nude into a bathroom mirror with apparent dismay. Make no mistake, Moore is a beautiful woman. But Fargeat selects angles that are not just unflattering but alienating, reflecting the body dysmorphia that Elisabeth suffers from. She sees her body not as it is but as it is not, comparing herself against what she used to look like — as displayed in the massive promotional photographs for her show. Her defeated expression seems to lament, "There's only so much working out and make-up can do." So, when she's offered "the substance" as a chance to reinvigorate her youth, this fading star is quick to accept, despite all the red flags of secrecy and sketchy pick-up locations. For anyone who's clicked an anti-aging quick-fix ad online, the allure is familiar, though Fargeat pushes this substance to extremes.

The Substance illustrates the dangers of external validation. Demi Moore vaccuums while a billboard featuring Margaret Qualley looks on in "The Substance." Credit: MUBI

From the putrid neon liquid comes a gruesome birthing process that splits Elisabeth's back in two, allowing the rise of Sue (Margaret Qualley), whose skin has never known a wrinkle, whose body is taught, tight, and pornographically proportioned. Naturally, Harvey chooses her to replace Elisabeth, and the workout show becomes more hyper-feminine, with glittering pinks as Sue's signature color, and more hyper-sexualized, with close-ups of her body pushing in from ogling to objectifying to unnerving. The rules of The Substance demand the women alternate weeks being active. While Sue is on her active week, Elisabeth lies naked, inert on the bathroom floor. When they swap, Elisabeth remembers nothing of Sue's experiences and feels trapped inside her home by her insecurities. So, why does she continue with the experience?

Well, for one thing, Elisabeth doesn't seem to have a life or identity outside of her work or stardom. She has no friends or family, so her view of herself is entirely reliant on external validation from fans. While she can't experience the thrill of the cameras on Sue, she can see the billboard of the It Girl outside her window. She can hear the fawning of the lusty neighbor next door. She can listen to the talk show interviews, where the host is enamored with Sue's brash charms. These glimpses of Sue's success feed but don't satisfy her. Perhaps this is why Elisabeth becomes fixated on eating large amounts of junk food and decadent French cuisine, in scenes that are shot as glistening and twisted as if she's part of Leatherface's family. Elisabeth has a hole inside her that external validation can no longer fill, nor can her feasts. Her self-loathing is kicking her into out-and-out self-destruction.

Meanwhile, Sue has some social life outside her work, as she's shown galavanting with friends and hooking up with various men. But she too is fed by fame; external validation is her very reason for existing. Soon, her need for fame drives her to feed on what life Elisabeth has left, leaving the older woman a withered crone. Physically, Elisabeth becomes the witch opposite Sue's picture-perfect princess, essentially externalizing her fears about aging. Then, like any villain worth her fairy tale, she tries to kill her pretty nemesis. But giving up the bad habit of chasing external validation isn't easy. Ask anyone who has quit Facebook, Twitter, or doomscrolling.

The Substance's twisted ending is the motivation you need for 2025. The climax of "The Substance" begins here. Credit: MUBI

After a prolonged and bloody battle, Sue comes out on top. But — as the instruction cards warn — they are one. There's no escape from who they are. Like Elisabeth, Sue begins to fall apart. On the day of her big shoot, her glistening teeth pop out one by one. Her polished fingernails flake off. Her ear drops right off her head, leaving a bloody hole. So, she runs home to seek the substance. Trying to reactivate the process leads to an unexpected rebirth that combines Sue and Elisabeth in a monstrous new configuration: Monstro Elisasue.

Her skin is twisted around her body, her arms poking out at horrific angles. Teeth protrude from beneath her clavicle. Elisabeth's yowling face quivers on her right shoulder blade. Her ears are so malformed that she has to pierce random spots of her lumpy head to wear her glittery earrings. But there's something inspiring in her persistence. Where Elisabeth couldn't find the confidence to go out with an old high school friend, repeatedly wiping away her make-up and trying again until she gave up altogether, Monstro Elisasue perseveres. She puts on the dress, earrings, and a version of make-up that makes her confident, and she confronts the world.

Fargeat gives us a vision of the praise and applause Monstro Elisasue imagines receiving upon her return to the studio. Of course, that's not what the world will offer. Amid the sleazy razzle-dazzle Harvey has planned for the New Year's Eve spectacle, Monstro Elisasue is a horror show. The lights come up to the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey, reminding us of the moment when the primates see the monolith and lost their minds. It's a moment of divine and demented cinema — and a warning. The crowd will not embrace her. They will gawp and gag and scream. They will call her a "monster" and "freak." They attack her. And she defiantly cries out, "It's me! I'm the same!"

Sue stretches before a poster of Elisabeth in "The Substance." Credit: MUBI

But she's not the same. Monstro Elisasue is a new year, new you version of herself — someone who can look into a mirror, see how's she's changed, and finally feel worthy of love. She's also free in a way neither Sue nor Elisabeth could be, because she doesn't remotely fit the beauty standards of this world and yet dares to be seen anyway. And there's something more. This collision of Monstro Elisasue and the world is Elisabeth's nightmare made real: being seen as she see herself and being rejected for it. And Fargeat delivers the worst-case scenario with a repulsive relish.

Violence follows and much, much, much more blood. Monstro Elisasue escapes, but leaves in her wake a flood of gore. She'll then fall on the sidewalk and be shattered into gooey, fleshy bits, with only the remnants of Elisabeth's face remaining animate. And that slop of skin, teeth, and determination finds her star on the Walk of Fame. In this moment, as she looks up to the palm trees and the stars, she smiles, with no one watching. She sees glitter falling upon her. She hears the praise she dreams of. Then, she melts into the cracks in the star and the pavement. Gone, but not forgotten.

The end is not a happy ending, but there's happiness to be found in this ending. The Substance plays not just as a satire of Hollywood's rigged game against women, but also as a spectacular example of catastrophizing made cinematic. By dreaming up the worst of worst-case scenarios, Fargeat invites us to look at our own personal obsessions, and see their ridiculousness. By embedding us in the cage of self-loathing that Elisabeth built around herself, made rancid with rotting food and listless binge-watching, Fargeat urges us to see the bars we erect around ourselves. By making Sue — a persona that's pretty, perfect, and adored — a vampire who feeds on Elisabeth's life force, the filmmaker urges us to consider what we sacrifice by what we put out into the public sphere. And when Elisabeth is splattered on the sidewalk, staring at the stars, Fargeat pleads with us to imagine what it might take for us to feel so free.

So, in 2025, embrace yourself, warts and all, and be the Monstro Elisasue you want to see in the world.

Whats new to streaming this week? (Jan. 3, 2025)

Mashable - Fri, 01/03/2025 - 05:00

Looking for something great to watch at home? Streaming subscribers are spoiled for choice between Hulu, Netflix, Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Shudder, Paramount+, Peacock, and more. And that's before you even look at the vast libraries of movies and television programs within each one!

Don't be overwhelmed or waste an hour scrolling through your services trying to determine what to watch! We've got your back whatever your mood. Mashable offers watch guides for all of the above, broken down by genre: comedy, thriller, horror, documentary, animation, and more.

But if you're seeking something brand spanking new (or new to streaming), we've got you covered there, too.

SEE ALSO: The best Netflix TV shows of 2024

Mashable's entertainment team has scoured the streaming services to highlight the most buzzed-about releases of this week and ranked them from worst to best — or least worth your time to most watchable. Whether you're looking for musical bliss, kooky animated-comedy, heart-rattling humor, brilliant buffoonery, or sharp scares, we've got you covered.

Here's what's new on streaming, from worst to best.

7. Slingshot

Sci-fi drama can make for great cinematic moments. Slingshot doesn't. Directed by Mikael Håfström, Slingshot centers on a trio of astronauts on a mission to Saturn's moon, Titan. But paranoia begins to overcome this lean crew, threatening their mission and their lives.

In his review for Mashable, Siddhant Adlakha wrote, "A psychological thriller with few thrills and a weak grasp of psychology, Mikael Håfström's Slingshot sees three capable actors monologuing in space about nothing in particular. The sci-fi drama has logical start and end points, but meanders aimlessly along the way, desperately searching for anything resembling plot or thematic meaning."

Simply put, this one's a skip.

Starring: Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, Emily Beecham, Tomer Kapon, and David Morrissey

How to watch: Slingshot is now streaming on Paramount+.

6. The Front Room

A24 is known for hits like Lady Bird, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Talk to Me, and Midsommar. They also released The Front Room.

SEE ALSO: Brandy and Kathryn Hunter break down the nuanced realism and "fairy tale" aspects in 'The Front Room'

Written and directed by Sam Eggers and Max Eggers, this horror thriller stars Brandy Norwood as a pregnant wife whose life is turned upside down when her demanding and devout mother-in-law (Poor Things' Kathryn Hunter) moves in and takes over. It's more than a battle of wills. It's a battle for the future of her child.

Critics weren't thrilled by The Front Room. In her review for Mashable, Kimber Myers praised Hunter's villainous portrayal as "devilishly good," but concluded, "The movie itself often feels like a grueling ordeal...It’s a good enough bad time, worth it for Hunter's performance alone — if you can stomach the rest."

Starring: Brandy Norwood, Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff

How to watch: The Front Room is now streaming on Max.

5. A Quiet Place: Day One

The third film of the Quiet Place universe is a prequel to John Krasinski's 2018 horror hit. Set in New York at the start of the alien invasion of Death Angels that hunt by sound, A Quiet Place: Day One follows Samira (The Wild Robot's Lupita Nyong'o) and Eric (Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn), strangers brought together by their drive to survive. Plus, they've got a cat.

SEE ALSO: Does the cat die? Your top 'A Quiet Place: Day One' question answered

Without A Quiet Place's original director or screenwriters, writer/director Michael Sarnoski (Pig) takes his own swing at this dystopian terrain, creating a story that's equal parts horror and a NYC love story. However, this prequel disappoints in both. As I wrote in Mashable's review, "A Quiet Place: Day One doesn't equal the sum of its parts. The love story at its core can't shine amid the required carnage and urban devastation demanded by the prequel's promise. The performances — while earnest — can't find footing in the crude plotting. The scares, which once were grounded in character and uncertainty, lose their luster without either. With all this movie tries to wedge in, it's just not enough."

Starring: Lupita Nyong'o, Djimon Hounsou, and Joseph Quinn

How to watch: A Quiet Place: Day One is now streaming on Prime Video.

4. Cunk on Life

Philomena Cunk is back. The earnest but atrociously uneducated interviewer who gave us Cunk on Earth returns with Cunk on Life. This time around, comedian Diane Morgan brings her silly-while-serious schtick to the quest to understand life itself.

SEE ALSO: The 33 best British TV shows of 2024, and where to watch them

This short-ass movie (or as Cunk calls it "landmark documentary special") clocks in at only one hour and 11 minutes, yet includes interviews with various academics, philosophers, and "professional mammals," who not only try to untangle the confusion around the meaning of life, but also the confusion of speaking with the eternally dim Philomena Cunk.

Starring: Diane Morgan, Michelle Greenidge, Charles Aitken, Ruth Adams, Rory Bray, Jerry Wilder, Jim Al-Khalili, Ruth Chang, Stephen Case, and Gregory Dart

How to watch: Cunk on Life is now streaming on Netflix.

3. A Real Pain

Written, directed by, and starring Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain follows an odd couple of cousins on a trip to Poland, where they hope to reconnect to their late grandmother's roots and their Jewish heritage. Where David (Jesse Eisenberg) is tightly wound and repressed, Benji (Kieran Culkin) is a charmingly chaotic chatterbox, who's quick with a hug, a witticism, and an out-of-pocket revelation.

The clever title A Real Pain plays on both the grief these cousins grapple with over the loss of their grandmother — and their decaying bond — as well as a cheeky way to allude to brash Benji. "Despite its title, A Real Pain is genuinely funny," Monica Castillo cheered in her review for Mashable, celebrating Culkin's incredible performance. "It's a level of unpredictability that can be funny yet sincere, and Culkin threads the needle between emotions with surprising acuity."

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin, Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy, and Daniel Oreskes

How to watch: A Real Pain is available for purchase on Prime Video.

SEE ALSO: The best Netflix TV shows of 2024 2. Wicked

Easily the most "popular" of new to streaming releases this week is Wicked.

Ahead of the Golden Globes, enjoy this four-time nominated hit, which unfurls the shocking and music-filled story of the Wicked Witch of the West. Before Dorothy and her little dog landed in Oz, there was a green-skinned girl named Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who faced fear, bullying, and prejudice while learning witchcraft. What would change her life for good was the unexpected friend she found in the glittering, blond Galinda (Ariana Grande). But can their bond survive the challenges thrown down by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum)?

SEE ALSO: How to watch 'Wicked' at home: Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are coming to the small screen

This tale of friendship, rivalry, and defiance first won fans as a novel by Gregory Maguire, then as a hit Broadway show. And now, you can see director Jon M. Chu's vision of Oz from the comfort of your couch. (But don't forget, this is a flashy musical, with special sing-a-long showtimes to boot!)

Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum

How to watch: Wicked is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

1. Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

Claymation's most charming duo is back! Cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his loyal beagle Gromit return in Vengeance Most Fowl, a delightful film that sees the return of classic Wallace & Gromit villain Feathers McGraw. After years locked away in prison (aka a zoo), the criminal penguin mastermind is ready to take down Wallace and Gromit for good. And luckily for him, Wallace's latest invention — the "smart gnome" — proves to be the perfect tool to enact his dastardly plan.

SEE ALSO: 'Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl' review: A delightful romp with an anti-AI streak

Vengeance Most Fowl proves that the Wallace & Gromit franchise is as inventive (and pun-filled) as ever. In my review, I praised its humor and creativity, writing, "Silliness reigns supreme here, with Vengeance Most Fowl's smallest details — including a deluge of puns and a cheese-themed captcha — just as likely to send you into orbit as its madcap set pieces, which involve everything from boats to office chairs." But that's not all: Vengeance Most Fowl also offers up some insightful commentary on the rise of AI. So what are you waiting for? Pour yourself some cheese, grab a cup of tea, and enjoy. — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter

Starring: Ben Whitehead, Peter Kay, Lauren Patel, and Reece Shearsmith

Broke but looking for love? Try the best free dating apps that actually work in 2025.

Mashable - Fri, 01/03/2025 - 04:30

If you’re on a budget and things look bleak in the relationship department, don’t panic (yet). You don’t need to shell out hundreds to find a genuine connection. The best free dating apps can help you meet a partner with potential so that you don't have to die alone amongst your belongings (or pets).

Sure, you'll still have to pay for the first date (and even more if things work out), but the cost of matching, swiping, and chatting doesn't have to be yet another item on your monthly budget.

Despite what Gen Z thinks, dating apps aren’t entirely gauche. (Though some are.) If you’re worried about rejection, catfishing, and superficial matches — good on you, you should be! But that doesn’t mean all dating apps will send you down a rabbit hole of disappointment.

You just need some guidance, encouragement, and a pinch of hope. And we’re here to hook you up — no credit card required.

What dating apps are completely free?

Mainstream dating apps like Tinder, OkCupid, Grindr, and Hinge all have robust free membership tiers that compete with paid subscriptions. Some completely free, more niche dating apps, like Archer and Lex, are also worth checking out. It just depends on what you’re looking for and how much work you’re willing to put in to get it.

Many argue that big-name dating apps (read: Match Group apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge) are all the same and have formed one amorphous dating app. But, if you know what you’re doing — and know what to look out for — you really can find exactly what you’re looking for in the shitshow that is online dating.

SEE ALSO: The uncomfortable truth behind the lavender marriage trend

Finding love (or a fun distraction) does come at a cost (e.g., vulnerability, time commitment, etc.), but it shouldn’t put you in the poor house. If it does, you’re being scammed. So, whether you're an introvert, a college student, or just looking for some steamy sexting action, we've got you covered.

Below, find our top picks for the best free dating apps. Use them to find your forever partner, a casual encounter, or something in between — all without paying a dime.

Note: All of the free dating sites below have a free membership option that gives you almost everything you need for the full experience. Though most offer paid premium memberships, these aren't apps like Match or eharmony, where you need to pay to match or chat with other users.

Beats are easily one of the most recognizable brands in the headphones and earbuds game. They've long been known for their incredible sound quality and punchy bass, and pair this with impeccable design and you really have one of the most reliable names in the audio field. As of Jan. 3, my favorite pair of earbuds (the Beats Fit Pro) are on sale at Amazon for $159.99.

They may be small and seemingly unimpressive, but they are a powerhouse of sound. With an immersive sound quality and incredible noise cancellation, they are an excellent choice for music lovers. There is also the option of varying degrees of sound cancellation, with modes to help keep you aware of your surroundings — perfect for exercising outdoors and generally remaining safe.

The Beats Fit Pro also boast a seriously impressive battery life, with a single charge lasting days. Speaking from experience, one charge lasts many, many hours, and you won't find yourself charging these often.

But the big plus for me is the fit. The silicon tip slides into your ear seamlessly, lodging in your ear and staying put for all types of activity and all intensities. I've tested these during all kinds of activities and have found them to stay perfectly secure.

And with this latest Amazon discount, I can't recommend the Beats Fit Pro enough.
