Nvidia is kicking off CES with a big keynote next week, and everyone is pretty sure they know at least one thing that's going to be announced.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: 5 car trends we expect to seeWhen the PC hardware company takes the stage on Jan. 6, it's widely expected that Nvidia will lift the veil on the GeForce RTX 5000 series of graphics cards. There are multiple reasons to believe this. One is that Nvidia's graphics card business has contributed to an explosion in market value over the past year or so thanks to AI deals with companies like OpenAI and Meta. Another is that the recent reveal trailer for The Witcher IV straight-up said it was "pre-rendered in Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU."
Now, according to at least one source, we might know when the first RTX 5000-series card will be available to consumers. According to a now-deleted X post by the Hong Kong outlet HKEPC (via Video Cardz), the first RTX 5000 card could launch on or around Jan. 21. It's expected that this will be the RTX 5080, with 5070 and 5090 models to come later, per PCGamesN.
According to PCGamesN, the new card is expected to be around 50 percent faster than the RTX 4090. It will also have GDDR7 RAM, which will give the 5000-series cards much higher transfer speeds than their predecessors.
Tweet may have been deletedGiven all of the circumstantial evidence (plus the fact that Nvidia's official GeForce X account is promoting the keynote address), it seems very likely that the 5000-series cards will show up at CES. And while this is just one source that could very well be wrong, don't be shocked if the official release date is sometime in January.

Opens in a new window Credit: Best Buy Ecovacs Cube Pro Robot Vacuum and Mop $329.99 at Best BuyIf one of your New Year's resolutions was to delegate more of your everyday tasks to robots, you've probably already been considering a robot vacuum or other device to make things easier. If you don't have one in mind, we've got an excellent suggestion to make that'll save you both serious time and money, and we're only two days into the new year!
As of Jan. 2, you can get the Ecovacs Cube Pro Robot Vacuum and Mop for $329.99 at Best Buy, down from its usual price of $799.99. That's a savings of $470 and a discount of 61%.
SEE ALSO: These are the best self-emptying robot vacuums that make life easierThis robot vacuum and mop combo makes it easier than ever to clean up messes, whether you're dealing with carpet or hard flooring throughout your home. It's a high-efficiency vacuum with laser-based avoidance tracking that can map your home and uses the same 3D scanning as advanced facial recognition tech so it can avoid running over cords or bumping into other obstacles. It uses 5100 Pa of suction power to then suck up debris and dirt across hard floors and carpets.
But it also has a mopping system that delivers 2,500 vibrations per minute and an 1,000mL water tank that means it can clean longer and with ease. Its self-washing system has a built-in scrubber that helps you attack dirt and grime, and then it squeezes out the dirty water for a more complete clean. It's all about making things more convenient for you. And it's so hands-off that it's actually quite easy to set it and forget it as it goes about all its household tasks.
If you want an advanced home robot to clean things up, you won't want to miss out on this particular model. Grab it while it's hot.
New Year's Day has come and gone, which means Pornhub is now blocked in 16 U.S. states.
The site blocked itself from almost all of the American South, as 404 Media put it, as a response to age-verification laws. These are state requirements to submit ID to access websites where over a third of the content hosted is explicit. Louisiana started the trend of passing age-verification bills two years ago; others have followed suit. As of January 1, such laws in Florida and South Carolina have gone into effect.
SEE ALSO: How to access porn for freeWhile Pornhub is not blocked in Louisiana, it is blocked in 16 states, a Pornhub representative confirmed to Mashable:
Alabama
Arkansas
Idaho
Kansas
Mississippi
Montana
Nebraska
North Carolina
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Virginia
In Louisiana, where users must submit ID to view Pornhub, the site has seen traffic decline around 80 percent, Aylo (Pornhub's parent company) told Mashable.
"These people did not stop looking for porn. They just migrated to darker corners of the internet that don't ask users to verify age, that don't follow the law, that don't take user safety seriously, and that often don't even moderate content. In practice, the laws have just made the internet more dangerous for adults and children," Aylo stated.
In a statement to Mashable, Aylo continued:
First, to be clear, Aylo has publicly supported age verification of users for years, but we believe that any law to this effect must preserve user safety and privacy, and must effectively protect children from accessing content intended for adults.
Unfortunately, the way many jurisdictions worldwide have chosen to implement age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous. Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy. Moreover, as experience has demonstrated, unless properly enforced, users will simply access non-compliant sites or find other methods of evading these laws.
Industry experts say age-verification laws don't work because they are easily circumvented with VPNs. They also raise concerns about privacy protection and safety, since websites will now have to host (even more of) people's personal information. It will be harder to be anonymous online, which experts warn is dangerous to free speech. Adult industry experts Mashable spoke to in an explainer on age-verification laws advocated for device-level filters, as did Aylo in its statement.
Some in the adult industry worry about what Trump's second presidential term will bring due to the conservative policy outline Project 2025 and its measure to ban porn. One of Project 2025's authors, Russell Vought, was caught on a secret recording stating that age-verification laws are the "back door" to a broader porn ban.
Tennessee's age-verification law, which was supposed to be enacted on January 1, has been blocked following a preliminary injunction by the adult industry trade organization the Free Speech Coalition. Because of this, Pornhub hasn't blocked Tennessee.
The Free Speech Coalition has also challenged age-verification laws in other states, including Florida, Indiana, and Texas. In the latter, Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton, a Texas district court initially blocked the law, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit upheld it. The Supreme Court will hear the case on January 15, deciding whether Texas's age-verification law violates the First Amendment.
The U.S. government has put the final touches on a sweeping rule that bans foreign access to Americans' bulk sensitive data, carrying out a Feb. 2024 Executive Order from President Joe Biden.
The order creates a new regulatory national security program, overseen by the U.S. Department of Justice, designated with preventing the transfer and exploitation of bulk personal data and certain U.S. government-related data abroad. It targets known "countries of concern," including China (Hong Kong and Macau), Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela, and aims to limit their ability to use bulk data for cyber espionage and influence campaigns — or to build U.S citizen profiles used for social engineering and identity theft.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Exhibitors, dates, ticket prices, and everything else you must knowCertain types of data are expressly prohibited from being transferred under the new regulation, such as personal identifiers, biometric data like facial scans and voice prints, and precise geolocation data. The rules also designate classes of prohibited, restricted, and exempt data transactions, whether through direct purchase or other commercial means.
"Countries of concern and covered persons can also exploit this data to collect information on activists, academics, journalists, dissidents, political opponents, or members of nongovernmental organizations or marginalized communities to intimidate them; curb political opposition; limit freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, or association; or enable other forms of suppression of civil liberties," the Justice Department writes, warning also of the use of bulk sensitive data to develop more sophisticated artificial intelligence and algorithms at greater national security risk.
The U.S. government has been investing more regulatory might into data privacy, with aims to more intensely monitor and limit the passage of Americans' sensitive personal data abroad. The Biden administration's TikTok ban, which forces the popular social media platform to divest from its China-owned parent company on the grounds of national security, is currently being considered by the Supreme Court, which will hear oral arguments on Jan. 10. President-elect Donald Trump has recently reversed his stance on banning the platform.
In December, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a new set of proposed rules that would limit the ability of data brokers to sell individuals' personal and financial data, recategorizing data brokerage under the same oversight as credit bureaus and background check companies.
The new Justice Department limits come amid several high-profile espionage attempts by foreign nations and actors, including a recent U.S. Treasury breach by China-backed hackers that overrode internal security systems and accessed unclassified documents. The breach was announced on the heels of a string of cyberattacks infiltrating users' personal data stored by major telecommunications companies — another China-linked hacking network known as Salt Typhoon.

Proving you're human with a CAPTCHA test has never been more fun.
Frontend development company Vercel used created Doom-themed CAPTCHA to show off its AI site builder, per TechCrunch.
In order to pass the CAPTCHA, you need to kill three monsters in the popular first-person shooter game. According to the app site, the Doom CAPTCHA is meant for "for educational and entertainment purposes," so don't expect to have to prove your gaming skills every time you want to check your bank account. For that, you'll probably still have to click all the images that have stairs or motorcycles, and probably fail a few times as is the case with most CAPTCHAs.
But this CAPTCHA is just as hard, if not harder. The app has tweaked the settings to make it more challenging, by increasing the speed and bumping the difficulty to "Nightmare" level. Still, judging by the buzz it has generated online, it hasn't stopped people from trying to beat the CAPTCHA and prove they're not robots.
You can try the Doom-themed CAPTCHA for yourself by going to https://doom-captcha.vercel.app/. To pass the CAPTCHA on a desktop, use the arrow keys to aim and the spacebar to shoot. Good luck and happy hunting.

2024 was a huge year for tech, with artificial intelligence fast becoming the most promising tech advancement since, well, perhaps the internet itself. We also saw a ton of incredible new gadgets, laptops, phones, tablets, electric vehicles, and yes, even a few cool new robots.
What we didn't see, however, is a couple of services and products that were promised for 2024, but simply never saw the light of day, or were postponed into 2025 and beyond.
We waited and waited, and now that the year is done and 2025 is most definitely here, it's time to do a recap of the stuff we didn't get this year.
Apple's next-gen CarPlay Erm, 2024 is over, folks. Where are the cars? Credit: AppleThis is perhaps the most straightforward omission. Apple has long been working on the next generation of CarPlay. In the company's own words, it's "the ultimate iPhone experience for the car," as it basically takes over the car's infotainment and instrument cluster and turns it into a "cohesive design experience that is the very best of your car and your iPhone."
While the CarPlay of today is adequate, it still feels oddly disconnected from the rest of the car's user interface. But this new generation of CarPlay sounds like it could bring us as close to the fabled Apple Car as we're ever going to get, given that the company reportedly stopped working on the project after a decade of development.
The problem? The first cars with this new CarPlay were supposed to arrive in 2024, but didn't. It's not just wishful thinking on our part, either: Apple explicitly said so. In fact, the company's CarPlay site still says that the "first models arrive in 2024". Sorry to be a bummer, but 2024 is over, so hopefully the new CarPlay-equipped models will arrive soon. When it does happen, we expect it to be in a Porsche, which has been working to integrate the latest CarPlay functionality into its upcoming models.
Spotify's hi-fi tierSpotify's hi-fi subscription tier is one of the weirdest tech stories in recent years. The company originally announced it in February 2021 (yes, nearly four years ago), and, at the time, it seemed like a logical step up to compete with Amazon, Apple, and Tidal, all of which offered high-fidelity streaming on their music services.
Ah, the sweet sound of Spotify Hi-Fi not launching yet another year after it was promised. Credit: SpotifyFast forward a couple of years, and Spotify launched nothing of the sort, while stubbornly maintaining that something akin to a hi-fi subscription tier is eventually coming (it may, however, be called Spotify Supremium, or something else entirely).
Right now, there's no launch date for the service (well, if you don't count the "later this year" which is what Spotify said in 2021), and the details are still very murky. Last we've heard on the matter was from Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who said that a "deluxe version of Spotify" with "better sound" is coming, but he wouldn't share when. Well, it certainly won't happen in 2024.
Tesla's cheaper car, Robotaxi, and unsupervised FSDThe fact that we didn't get any of the above in 2024 hardly surprised anyone, given that Tesla CEO publicly said they're all coming in 2025 and beyond. But it's worth revisiting the topic, as the fabled super-affordable Tesla, the self-driving, people-hauling Tesla Robotaxi, and a version of Tesla's full-self driving (FSD) software that can drive the car autonomously, were all promised for 2024 (or earlier) at some point.
For example, Musk said in 2020 that Tesla could launch a $25,000 car by 2023. The idea saw much back and forth over the years, with Musk recently giving up on the idea of a "$25,000 non-robotaxi regular car model," while at the same time promising a "more affordable" Tesla in the first half of 2025.
Per Musk, Tesla Robotaxis were supposed to roam the streets as early as 2020; now the actual Robotaxi (or CyberCab, we're not sure about the name) model has been revealed, and is scheduled to launch in 2026.
Tweet may have been deletedFinally, unsupervised FSD, which should bring newer Teslas to the point at which they can drive themselves without the need of a human driver's intervention, is now scheduled for 2025, even though it was originally promised way, way earlier than that. The last widely available, supervised version of FSD launched very late in 2024, and reports indicate the company may finally be close to nailing it.
TL;DR: Live stream Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons on YouTube TV or Sling TV.
The final week of NFL regular season is here. The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons will face off at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Panthers are 4-12 and have long been eliminated from playoff contention. The Falcons are 8-8 and on the bubble in the NFC.
In order for the Falcons to make the playoffs, they will have to beat the Panthers. But, they would also need the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) to lose their Week 18 game against the New Orleans Saints (5-11). That would allow the Falcons to re-take the top spot in the NFC South, and likely the No. 4-seed in the conference.
When is Panthers vs. Falcons?Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons takes place at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 5. The two teams will face off at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The game will air on CBS, where Ian Eagle is expected to do the play-by-play. Charles Davis is expected to join him in the booth.

But all that anecdotal evidence we've been collecting over the years since the apps launched, all the friends, acquaintances, and distant cousins who've met the loves of their lives with a swipe — their digital meet cutes might make it feel like the only way to meet your soulmate is online. But, that feeling isn't a fact.
Don't rely on dating app anecdotesAccording to a YouGov survey on How Brits Meet Their Partners published in Sept. 2024, 8 percent of us met our current or most recent significant others on a dating app. Putting that into perspective, that's less than those who met the most common way, through friends (16 percent), and less than those who met through work (14 percent), or in passing while out (12 percent). But that's also more than those who met through university or other higher education (5 percent), or through a shared hobby (4 percent). Even when combined with those who met online, through a site like OkCupid or Match, the percentage of people who met their current or most recent partner digitally rises to 12 percent. Not insignificant, but by no means a landslide.
U.S. think tank the Pew Research Center conducted similar research in their 2023 report involving 6,034 Americans. Only one in 10 adults who were in a committed relationship met their partner on a dating website or on an app, with 30 percent of Americans having tried them at one point or another.
Why does it seem like everyone's met on a dating app?Maybe we just feel like app-based relationships are everywhere because they're still relatively new. Going from zero to, as YouGov has it, 8 percent in the years since dating apps were invented is a big enough jump to make an impression. Or maybe, on some level, it's still surprising enough to be disproportionately memorable when we hear about people who met on an app and are actually happy. Or maybe it's just a small talk thing people have repeated so many times over the years that we've started to believe it. How many times have you said or heard something like: "Oh you met on Hinge? I swear everyone meets on an app these days"?
I was a big fan of dating apps when I was single. I used them to meet people for the majority of my adult life. My mum even met my lovely stepdad on a dating site over 20 years ago, way back when you couldn't add photos to your profile (imagine!) so using the apps felt pretty natural and normal to me when they came around.
Of course, I get why some people hate them for things like gamifying the dating process, encouraging us to judge books by their covers, and facilitating scores of unethical dating trends. But when I was younger, when dating was more of a hobby than a vocation, the benefits of chatting with lots of hot people while bypassing the doubt and anxiety of approaching them in real life were too huge for me to ignore. I even ended up meeting the man who'd become my husband on an app.
So yes, they can lead to something serious. Just not as often as we've led ourselves to believe. And these misplaced high expectations are making the dating scene feel even more hellish.
Hope Flynn, relationship expert and founder of female self-empowerment community So What calls dating apps "a mixed bag," adding: "I know plenty of people that have found real long-lasting relationships and even marriages through apps. But let's be real, they can get frustrating. There's lots of ghosting, trying to figure out if someone is genuine or not, and tonnes of conversations that just end up falling flat and going nowhere."
Integrative counsellor Amy Sutton, who focuses on her clients' relationships, trauma, and self-confidence, goes a little further, calling the apps a "double-edged sword" and an "emotional rollercoaster" that some of us might enjoy while others just want to get off it. Sutton, a Counselling Directory member, adds that their efficacy depends on how each user defines success. If you just want some casual hookups, the apps can be a gold mine. And if you're looking for The One, you never know, you could get lucky.
"But for others," she tells me, "the process can be frustrating, disheartening, and even traumatising. I’ve worked with clients who have experienced severe anxiety and low mood as a result of repeated experiences such as ghosting, breadcrumbing, and other dating app-associated trends."
And if you've put all your eggs in the dating app basket only to find it's not working out the way you expected, it can suck away your hope for the future. In its place, Flynn says, you'll find exhaustion, pessimism, and self-doubt. Not exactly the best frame of mind for finding love, or for your mental health in general.
Sutton says her clients are often left feeling "invisible" or "unlovable" after a string of app letdowns. They wonder whether there's something wrong with them for not being able to get them to work the way they seem to for other people. This leaves them feeling hopeless about the prospect of finding love anywhere.
"Dating fatigue leaves people so disillusioned by the process that they either avoid dating altogether or engage half-heartedly," she adds, "which perpetuates this sense of burnout. It can make them start to believe that they are simply destined to be alone. It can also lead to objectification of others — we stop seeing that there are real humans behind the profiles and start 'shopping' for matches like we would a new pair of shoes. Our ability to form meaningful connections that blossom over time is eroded."
Using dating apps as one 'string to your dating bow'If you want to keep using dating apps but also keep this damaging snowball effect from rolling, Flynn recommends seeing the apps more as a string to your dating bow, rather than your one and only hope of meeting someone. Try to put yourself out there in real life too.
To do that, Flynn suggests working to make yourself more approachable and trying to be a bit more brave, even if you're feeling shy. "Keeping a friendly and positive vibe no matter where you are can really make a difference to how people respond to you," she adds. IRL dating events have boomed this year — likely because other people are sick of the apps, too — so look for any in your area with social media or sites like Eventbrite.
Sutton has similar advice, saying: "Remain open and curious. Approach life with an open mind and you can start building your confidence to connect with others at all levels — be they acquaintances, friends, or potential partners. Whether it's accepting an invitation to an event you might otherwise have said 'no' to or striking up a conversation in the local coffee shop, being open to connection in the moment without the pressure of expectation projects a confidence and charisma that can be very attractive."
And don't feel like you have to stay on the apps at all if you don't like using them.
"These platforms are a tool," Sutton points out, "not a magic solution. The swipe-based, algorithm-driven approach to love often reduces human connection to something transactional. Remember, real love is about building intimacy, trust, and connection. Things that take time, patience, and often a bit of luck."
