Surprise, surprise. Another week has brought us another batch of Amazon deals. While we aren't seeing any dramatic price drops as we would on a shopping holiday like Prime Day or Black Friday, we've still found a few sweet deals worth shopping on April 22.

If deal hunting isn't your cup of tea, we've done the hard part for you. Here are the best Amazon deals of the day to kick off the week.

The newest iteration of the Fitbit Versa, released in the latter half of 2023, is "an excellent fitness-focused smartwatch with welcome design improvements over the last generation," according to our friends over at PCMag (which is owned by Mashable's publisher, Ziff Davis). We haven't had a chance to review the Versa 4, but we did love its predecessor, the Versa 3. It's certainly not perfect, with limited access to apps and no ECG or stress sensors, but it does sport a larger selection of built-in fitness features, notable design and usability upgrades, and a more responsive touch screen. It typically retails for $199.95, but you can save $50 at Amazon as of April 22 and snag it for $149.95 — that's just $10 shy of its lowest price ever and only its second major discount this year.

If your'e in the market for a new Android phone, Samsung's new Galaxy A35 5G is a solid choice. And through April 28, you'll get a free $40 Amazon gift card when you snag it. The budget-friendly Galaxy device was just released in the U.S. to offer Samsung lovers an alternative to the Galaxy S24. As a budget phone, it doesn't offer the same speed and performance as the S24, but it also doesn't cost over $1,000. It packs a gorgeous 6.6-inch display, Samsung's Exynos 1380 processor, a 50MP wide-angle camera with optical image stabilization, and a long-lasting 5,000mAh battery that supports fast-charging. It's not the most impressive phone on the market, but at just $399.99, its price is hard to beat — especially when you get a free $40 gift card to go with it.

Does 'Ripley's murder scenes count as ASMR?

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 11:15

On its surface, Episode 3's boat scene is defined by silence, but not lack of sound. The creak of the boat's wooden planks. The soft friction of fabric. The crinkling of a discarded paper bag. The gentle roar of a fire lit.

Mashable Entertainment Editor, Kristy Puchko, takes us on an auditory journey to determine whether or not the mostly dialogue-free episodes of Ripley count as ASMR.

Ripley is currently streaming on Netflix.

'Deadpool and Wolverine': Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds join forces in NSFW trailer

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 10:33

Just when we thought superhero fatigue had set in, here comes a full Deadpool & Wolverine trailer with Deadpool sticking a gun right to Wolverine's forehead, and the dude just grins in response.

Last year was frankly hell when it came to the barrage of meh-to-bad live-action superhero movies that included Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, The Marvels and The Flash. But 2024 is looking up. Yeah sure, Madame Web was weird and wonky, but it was different! This fall Joker: Folie à Deux is going full musical. But this summer, everyone's favorite merc with a mouth is back — and he's bringing his favorite X-Men member into the fray for another R-rated, action-packed, wildly inappropriate for kids romp?

You had us at reuniting Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds (who previously played the characters in the rightly forgotten X-Men: Origins - Wolverine). Seemingly set before Logan — or maybe in an alt time-line — Deadpool & Wolverine has two of the most anti-social supes in the Marvel catalogue teaming up to Madonna. Naturally.

As both heroes say in this NSFW trailer: "LET'S FUCKING GO!"

Deadpool and Wolverine premieres in theaters on July 26.

This deal extends to the 128GB model which means you'll have ample space for your favorite apps in addition to downloading every episode of your favorite show on Netflix. If 128GB doesn't cut it, there's room for 1TB of expandable storage.

Samsung mentions the AMOLED screen on the A35 is the brightest screen in the Galaxy A Series that'll help out when watching your favorite show or reading emails while outside on the sunny days.

If your last phone didn't hold up well in terms of durability, the Samsung Galaxy A35 aims to impress. With an IP67 rating, the phone is protected from water, dirt, and dust, so you'll be better equipped for any adventure.

If it's time to upgrade your phone to a model that supports 5G or that's large enough to handle the countless photos we take everyday, now's a great time to snag the new Samsung Galaxy A35 for $399.99 which comes with a free $40 Amazon gift card you'll be able to use on a future purchase.

Tesla cuts FSD price, ditches Enhanced Autopilot

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 10:09

Shortly after reducing the price of its cars in the U.S., Tesla has now dramatically reduced the price for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package.

The price for FSD on all variants of Tesla vehicles is now $8,000, down from $12,000, in the U.S. In Canada, which is the only other market where FSD is available, the price is now CAD $11,000.

FSD is an optional set of features that gives Tesla cars several autonomous driving options, including partially autonomous navigating to destination, as well as stopping at stop signs and traffic lights. It was released as limited beta in Oct. 2020 and expanded to all interested Tesla owners in Nov. 2022. At launch, FSD cost $5,000, but the price was gradually increased until it peaked at $15,000 in Sept. 2022.

That's a big discount. Credit: Tesla

The price reduction for the permanent FSD activation follows a price cut for the FSD subscription option, which was recently slashed in half and is now $99 per month. The new FSD pricing actually makes a lot of sense, as it was hard to imagine someone dishing out $12,000 outright for something that can be had for a hundred bucks per month.

In addition to the price cut, Tesla also simplified the FSD options by reducing the "Enhanced Autopilot" package, which was a sort of middle ground between Tesla's "Basic Autopilot" set of features and FSD. Customers who have previously purchased Enhanced Autopilot can now upgrade to FSD for $2,000, Teslarati reported.

SEE ALSO: Tesla cuts prices after massive Cybertruck recall

FSD is no longer in beta (it's now called FSD (Supervised)), but it still doesn't really fulfil the promise in its name, which is fully autonomous driving, instead requiring the driver to be attentive and ready to take over at all times. Elon Musk keeps promising massive improvements on that front; while the system is constantly tweaked, it still appears to be far from being completely capable of driving on its own.

The changes come after a challenging couple weeks for Tesla, in which the company reported weaker-than-expected vehicle deliveries, cut more than 10 percent of its workforce, and recalled all of its Cybertrucks.

Rabbit R1: 7 things it can do that steals ChatGPT's shine

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 08:00

The Rabbit R1 shook up the tech world as it hit the scene with a bright orange chassis and a promise to save us from the chaos of navigating countless apps.

If you don't know what the Rabbit R1 is, or why the internet is going crazy over the device, it's an AI assistant that can fit in your palm. However, what makes it different from ChatGPT and Gemini is that it's designed to take action on your behalf.

For example, ChatGPT and Gemini can answer, "What's the best pizzeria in my area?" However, if you were to ask, "Can you place an order for a pepperoni pizza from this place?", you'd get the equivalent of a blank stare from those assistants.

Conversely, in addition to an LLM (large language model), an LAM (large action model) underpins Rabbit R1. So if you were to ask it that same question, it would actually take action — and order it for you. I'll dive into the Rabbit R1's capabilities, but first, let's take a step back.

SEE ALSO: Humane Ai Pin reviews: Top 5 common complaints about the 'smartphone killer' Rabbit R1 price

The Rabbit R1 is just $199, making it relatively inexpensive compared to other AI assistant devices (e.g., the $699 Humane Ai pin).

Unlike the Humane Ai pin, the Rabbit R1 doesn't require a monthly subscription.

Rabbit R1 release date

The first batch of Rabbit R1 orders are expected to start shipping some time "around April 24."

Rabbit is hosting a "pick up party" on April 23, allowing some buyers to grab their new Rabbit R1 at a location in New York City — but only if they RSVP'd in time.

The Rabbit R1 is a compact, cute, pocketable gadget with a 2.88-inch screen. This bright-orange device is striking, featuring a rotating camera (i.e., the "Rabbit Eye"), an analog scroll wheel, and a push-to-talk button.

If I were to get the Rabbit R1 in my hand, I'd instinctively want to play 8-bit games on it. It looks like a retro-esque handheld gaming device à la the Playdate, another brightly colored, squarish gadget.

Rabbit R1 specs

Here's a quick rundown of the Rabbit R1's specs:

  • 2.88-inch touchscreen

  • 360-degree rotating camera

  • 2.3GHz MediaTek processor

  • 4GB of RAM

  • 128GB of storage

  • Speaker (on the back)

  • SIM card slot (for a 4G LTE connection)

  • All-day battery life (reportedly) via USB-C charging

Rabbit R1: 7 cool things it can do

Now here comes the fun part. What, exactly, can the Rabbit R1 do? The list appears to be endless.

However, based on the X account of Jesse Lyu, the CEO of Rabbit Inc., here are some of its most noteworthy capabilities.

1. Generate AI images

Lyu boasts that you can use Rabbit R1 to generate AI images (via Midjourney) without shelling out a monthly fee.

Watch Lyu point his Rabbit R1 at a pair of sneakers and ask who makes them.

In this mind-blowing use case, Lyu tells the Rabbit R1 that he's having trouble with his Nest thermostat — and the AI device proceeds to identify the issue.

Watch the Rabbit R1 translate text on a KitKit bar into English. This could be a useful tool for travel, particularly while visiting countries with languages that are foreign to you.

The Rabbit R1 can play music and podcasts via voice commands.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Mashable will be at the Rabbit R1 pick-up party. Expect a review on the Rabbit R1 soon — we'll be testing how well these features work in the real world.

Phones have changed in many ways over the years, but one accessory has remained constant: The ability to jazz things up a bit with some nice wallpaper.

The wallpaper options on an iPhone are plentiful, from images you've taken yourself to various categories that come with the phone itself. There are also multiple customization options, from adding widgets to applying effects. If you're not familiar with how to change your wallpaper, we've laid it all out in our guide below.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap Wallpaper.

Step 3: Choose your new wallpaper.

This is the fun bit! As you can see there are plenty of options. You can browse the categories in the "Featured" section to choose a wallpaper that comes with the phone, or tap into Photos to pick an image you've taken.

Step 4: Customize!

You don't have to add customizations, but the option is there. You can tap boxes to add widgets, for instance, or alter the font that the time will display in. Tap Add once you've finished.

Step 5: Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair.

PS5 Pro vs. PS5: 3 biggest expected upgrades

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 07:00

PS5 Pro vs. PS5 is the showdown you'll want to stick around for to determine whether the PS5 Pro will be worth the upgrade.

Rumors have been flying around about a potential "PS5 Pro" for months. This supposedly more powerful variant of the PS5 is not a new console, but rather an enhanced re-release similar to 2016's PS4 Pro. It would play all the same games, but not all at the same level of graphical performance.

The question is, what will the PS5 Pro offer that the PS5 doesn't? Although the PS5 Pro isn't even out yet, we've got an idea.

SEE ALSO: PS5 Slim vs. PS5: What are the differences? PS5 Pro vs. PS5: 3 rumored new features

We don't know yet what the PS5 Pro looks like, how much it costs, or when it will come out. But based on solid reporting around the internet, here's what to expect in terms of tangible upgrades if and when it comes out.

Much faster GPU

In terms of raw numbers, word on the street is that the PS5 Pro will feature a new GPU that runs about 45 percent faster than the old one. Its ray-tracing hardware is also said to be three times faster than a regular PS5. This is all according to specs originally reported by Insider Gaming (and later corroborated by The Verge).

The CPU can be a little faster, too

Beyond that, the CPU is the same, but a new mode will give developers the ability to clock it at about 10 percent faster than normal.

The Verge's reporting also indicates that developers can use an additional 1.2GB of system memory for their games.

"Ultra-Boost"

The Verge ran another piece in mid-April outlining Sony's plans for how these spec upgrades will affect games. For starters, Sony's ambition is to have more games run at both 4K resolution and 60 frames per second (fps), with ray tracing turned on. That was the back-of-the-box promise when PS5 launched, but it hasn't played out that way. Many games can do 4K or 60 fps, with ray-tracing often tied to one or the other. Very few games can do three all at the same time.

However, games that are locked at 30 fps can still be enhanced. The Verge says developers can use the PS5 Pro's horsepower to increase resolution without increasing frame rate, if that's what makes the most sense.

There's also talk of an "ultra-boost" mode that might be able to help games run at higher or more stable frame rates without extensive work by the developers. It should be noted that most of the above enhancements would theoretically require extra work by developers to accommodate, since they can't assume every customer who buys the game has a PS5 Pro. The PS4 Pro had a similar feature called "Boost Mode," so there's precedent for this.

Unfortunately, that's about all we've got in terms of what the PS5 Pro can actually do for you while playing games. Put simply, expect some games to run at higher resolutions, frame rates, or both, possibly with ray tracing enabled. It might just be a more expensive PS5 that can do what the original PS5 was supposed to do four years ago.

John Oliver takes an eye-opening deep dive into UFOs

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 06:35

John Oliver spends most of his time diving into serious (and often fairly grim) subjects, but on Sunday he turned his attention to an age-old mystery: UFOs.

In the clip above the Last Week Tonight host breaks down the history of UFO sightings in the U.S., from the origin of the term "flying saucer" to people's (understandable) mistrust of the government on the issue, and finally to NASA's recent decision to start talking about sightings and digging through unclassified reports in an effort to explain them.

"It's both promising and long overdue to see people approaching this issue soberly and scientifically and, perhaps most importantly, boringly," Oliver concludes. "And I know that is hard — this is an area where it's easy to fall into one of two camps: hardcore sceptics who roll their eyes at the whole subject, and true believers who are convinced everything has a fantastical explanation the government is keeping from us. You will see, in comments below this piece on YouTube, those two groups fighting it out over everything I've said here, and only agreeing on the fact that I am a fucking idiot."

"There needs to be room for honest enquiry, because science is all about collecting small answers that eventually help us address big questions."

Furious Watcher fans are blasting it as 'greedy' over paid subscription service

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 06:02

On Friday, Watcher announced it will leave YouTube to launch its own paid subscription service. By Sunday, it had lost around three percent of its subscribers and had been inundated with a deluge of criticism. Fans are speculating this could be the beginning of the end for the popular digital production company.

In a 14-minute video uploaded to YouTube on April 19, Watcher founders Ryan Bergara, Shane Madej, and Steven Lim unveiled their new paid streaming service also called Watcher. Priced at $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year, the independent platform will be the new home for the company's content going forward, hosting series such as Ghost Files, Puppet History, and Survival Mode. For comparison, a Standard Netflix subscription with ads costs $6.99 per month.

"We want to keep the price low enough where anybody and everybody is able to afford it, but it also has to support the things that we do here," Lim said in the video announcement.

Watcher won't pull content that has already been uploaded to YouTube, so you can still go back to watch old episodes of Dish Granted and Are You Scared? for free. Trailers and season premieres will continue to be uploaded to Watcher's YouTube account as well. However, full upcoming seasons of Watcher's shows will now require a paid subscription to access.

SEE ALSO: YouTube's favorite ghoul boys, Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara, tell us what they've been watching

Explaining their decision to leave YouTube, Watcher's founders stated that moving to a paid subscription model would allow them to increase the production quality of their shows. While initially reminiscing about their YouTube careers, the group also shared frustrations and limitations they faced creating content for the platform. Madej noted that Watcher's subscription service would allow them to offer "high quality series in season form, beautifully organised, ad-free."

"The more resources we have, the more time we could focus on making [Ghost Files] better," said Bergara, noting that they will be travelling internationally some episodes.

Watcher's beta period has already started, with the full streaming service scheduled to launch on May 31.

Mashable has reached out to Watcher for comment.

Worth it? Watcher fans are skeptical Credit: Watcher

The news of Watcher's paid subscription service has not gone over well, to put it mildly. Scathing criticism has flooded social media, with upset fans deriding the move as "greedy" and "out of touch." Some fans have even responded by subscribing to Watcher then posting their login details on social media, taking Madej's statement that users can share their accounts to heart.

"did i just....get laid off as a watcher fan???" gracehenning7389 commented on Watcher's announcement video. The post has been liked over 45,000 times.

"I cant explain it but this video feels like when your rich corporate boss gives you a pizza party instead of a raise," said nikkimurray9942.

Many are unimpressed with Watcher's goal to improve its production quality, saying that it was the shows' humour that attracted them. In fact, some consider Watcher's lower production value to be more desirable, having enjoyed the "rough around the edges chaos" it created.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

Others have noted that while Watcher may think $6 is a reasonable fee it's still a significant amount of money to many, particularly international fans.

"How am i supposed to pay for 6 dollars for a service when after i adjust it to my currency it’s more than the cost of groceries?" zarishhassan5286 commented on YouTube. "Your American audience can barely afford it, how will your international audience afford it at all?"

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

Watcher already has a Patreon which charges a minimum of $5 per month. This is being modified to only contain podcast content, prompting some subscribers to state they will be pulling their support. As of writing, said Patreon has less than 6,000 paid members.

Reddit Tweet may have been deleted

Unfavourable comparisons between Watcher and independent comedy platform Dropout have also run rampant. While both streaming services cost the same, the company behind Game Changer and Dimension 20 has a large cast, a varied selection of shows, and releases new content almost daily. Meanwhile, Watcher primarily relies on Bergara and Madej as hosts, and has released just 377 videos since its inception — approximately one every four days.

Though Watcher is no doubt hoping to replicate Dropout's success, many fans have drawn parallels with Rooster Teeth instead. While the defunct digital production company didn't completely leave YouTube, it did encourage fans to watch content on its website, as well as offer exclusive video content to paid subscribers. It also removed shows such as Red vs. Blue and Camp Camp from YouTube, aiming to drive fans to its website. Unfortunately this wasn't enough to save it, with Rooster Teeth announcing it would shut down last month.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Watcher lost 3% of its subscribers in three days Credit: Mashable screenshot: Watcher

Watcher was launched by former BuzzFeed personalities Bergara, Madej, and Lim in Jan. 2020. The trio had already garnered fans through video series such as BuzzFeed Unsolved, a true crime and paranormal mystery show hosted by Bergara and Madej, and Worth It, a food review show hosted by Lim. As such, they aimed to make similar content under the Watcher banner, gaining over 200,000 subscribers within two weeks of launching their YouTube channel.

Said YouTube channel has now lost a significant number of subscribers, dropping from 2.93 million to 2.84 million in the mere three days since Watcher's announcement. While the company is planning to leave YouTube anyway, this mass subscriber exodus is a clear message from Watcher's fans.

Much of the criticism has been levelled specifically at Lim as the company's CEO. Though the role was initially shared between the three founders, Bergara and Madej stepped down to focus on creating content in 2023. As such, many fans view Lim as the ultimate decision-maker and thus the villain in this piece.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

This perception wasn't helped by Lim's announcement of new series Travel Season, described as a "spiritual successor" to Worth It. Running for 12 seasons, Worth It featured Lim, co-host Andrew Ilnyckyj, and cameraman Adam Bianchi visiting multiple restaurants to try similar dishes at "drastically different price points."

Travel Season is starting off much smaller, with just six episodes shot at one destination — likely South Korea judging from the brief clips shown. However, the news coinciding with Watcher's paid subscription reveal left a bad taste in viewers' mouths, some recalling that Worth It's most expensive meals could sometimes cost thousands of dollars.

An occasional $2,000 pizza here and there might not significantly impact Watcher's budget in the grand scheme of things. Still, it isn't a great look when you're asking fans to start paying up for previously free content.

"This is going to make Steven's new show look so out of touch," posted redditor u/1920sremastered. "Especially if it's shot the same way as the WTV announcement video. Slow-mo shots of Steven eating wagyu, flying, driving a Tesla, drinking wine, flying, eating caviar, flying again......"

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i review: A sick dual-screen laptop with life-changing productivity

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 06:00

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is a dual-display work of art. With the included folio stand, the laptop can be propped up in landscape mode to create the best portable workstation I’ve ever had. With such easy app-juggling, my productivity levels were out of this world.

It's like a two-monitor desktop setup you can carry in your hand. I often had Spotify and my Pomodoro timer open on the bottom half while I was working in Google Docs on the top half. And if I had articles to read, I’d flip the laptop to book mode.

There’s a virtual keyboard and trackpad you can use, too. But to keep your screens smudge free, the Yoga Book 9i ships with a detachable keyboard, a mouse, and a Gen-3 Digital Pen. With these surprisingly premium accessories, I didn’t miss the traditional laptop experience at all.

In fact, this was almost an elevated laptop experience for me. There are certainly a few things the Yoga Book 9i could stand to improve. It may not land on our best laptops page, but I’m loving this dual-display laptop era we’re in right now.

SEE ALSO: Asus Zenbook Duo review: Watch 'Love is Blind' on top while 'live tweeting' on the bottom Lenovo Yoga Book 9i price and specs

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i isn’t cheap, but it’s surprisingly affordable for a dual-screen laptop. Our review unit costs $2,010 on Lenovo’s website and comes with the following specs:

  • Intel Core Ultra 7 155U CPU

  • Integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics

  • 16GB of RAM

  • 1TB SSD

  • Dual, 13-inch, 2880 x 1800-pixel, 60Hz OLED displays

  • Rotating 360-degree Bowers & Wilkins soundbar

For that price, you’ll also get a Lenovo Digital Pen (Gen 3), a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and a folio that fits the keyboard and acts as a stand for the Yoga Book 9i. If you want more RAM for smoother performance, you can spend an extra $57 to bump it up to 32GB.

Get Deal What I like about the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i

The Yoga Book 9i is full of amazing features, including its two beautiful OLED displays and an exceptional rotating Bowers & Wilkins soundbar.

Stunning high-res OLED displays

The Yoga Book 9i offers two attractive 2880 x 1800-pixel OLED panels with a 3:2 aspect ratio, providing more vertical real estate. The 13-inch display size might sound small on paper, but with two displays, there’s more than enough room to work.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

To test the display quality, I watched YouTube trailers for "Fall Guy" and "Arthur the King." An impressive level of detail comes through, from the laugh lines around Ryan Gosling’s eyes to the individual strands of dog hair on Arthur. The colors are vibrant, too, whether you’re looking at lush landscapes, explosions, or bustling cities.

One notch below max brightness allowed me to see the displays perfectly while working outside on my patio — even when the sun was shining down on me in the middle of the day. With the display at almost max brightness, however, the battery drained pretty fast.

Dual-display efficiency is unmatched

My desktop PC setup at home has two monitors, and having two monitors is one of the only things that I miss when I use my laptop to work from a coffee shop or a library. Sure, I could buy a portable monitor to solve this issue, but that’s just extra weight, setup, and money spent.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

Using Lenovo’s Yoga Book 9i over the past few weeks has made me realize I want a laptop with two displays. It’s so easy to set everything up — and I often bring a wireless mechanical keyboard to type on anyway, so not having a built-in keyboard isn’t that big of a deal.

Having two displays allows me to pull up Spotify and my Gmail on the bottom while working on Google Docs and other apps on top. Or, I can watch a YouTube video while writing if I need a little extra entertainment. So much room for activities!

Plus, using the Yoga Book 9i in dual-display landscape mode puts the top screen at a more ergonomic height, which means I don’t need to bring along a laptop stand while working remotely.

Multiple modes to play with

Even though I defaulted to using the same mode — dual-display landscape mode propped up on the stand with the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse nearby — I really appreciate how many different modes there are to experiment with.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

Using the stand, you can prop up the laptop in book mode for two portrait displays. This mode was helpful for reading or writing lengthy articles.

You can use the Yoga Book 9i like a traditional laptop, either by employing the virtual keyboard or by magnetically attaching the Bluetooth keyboard to the upper portion of the lower display

Or, fold one display slightly backwards to prop up the laptop in tent mode, perfect for watching movies. If you fold one display completely backwards, you can use the Yoga Book 9i as a tablet.

Amazing sound quality

Music aficionados: these are the laptop speakers for you. The Yoga Book 9i has a rotating Bowers & Wilkins soundbar that gave every song I listened to a full-body, atmospheric quality that I’ve never heard from laptop speakers before — not even from my own Yoga 9i’s Bowers & Wilkins soundbar.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

While listening to Bo Burnham’s “All Eyes on Me (The Outtakes Version),” the moody, low sounds layered in the song came through flawlessly and weren't drowned out when he started singing. I also played Unprocessed's “Real ft. Polyphia's Tim Henson & Clay Gober,” and its nuanced lows, mids, and highs sounded well-balanced and crisp.

I found the volume sweet spot to be between 20 to 30 percent, but you can easily bump it up to max volume for room-filling sound that’s not distorted at all.

A thin, satisfying keyboard

I was shocked that I actually enjoyed typing on the detached Bluetooth keyboard that comes with the Yoga Book 9i. It’s an ultra-thin chiclet keyboard, and I never thought I’d be using the words “comfortable” and “intuitive” to describe it, but here we are.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

When comparing the typing experience between this portable keyboard and my daily driver laptop’s built-in keyboard, there’s no difference in productivity. All the keys are where I’d expect them to be and I never found myself needing to mash the Backspace key while working to correct errors.

Gorgeous 'Tidal Teal' colorway

In a market full of silver, gray, and black laptops, it was incredibly refreshing to see the Yoga Book 9i’s beautiful Tidal Teal colorway.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

This deep teal adorns the Yoga Book 9i’s entire chassis, including the rotating soundbar, as well as the detachable Bluetooth keyboard, the Digital Pen, the Bluetooth Yoga mouse, and the protective folio.

What’s ‘eh’ about the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i

Some of the Yoga Book 9i’s features stood out to me immediately as fantastic or disappointing, but other features floated in the middle of each extreme.

Middle-of-the-road performance

For a $2,000 laptop, I expected the Yoga Book 9i to deliver better performance.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

It’s equipped with one of Intel’s new chips — the Intel Core Ultra 7 155U — and yet, its Geekbench 6 score matched that of the HP Envy Move with an older Intel Core i5-1335U CPU.

In practice, using the Yoga Book 9i felt relatively zippy, but there were quite a few stuttery moments sprinkled in.

As I’m typing this in Google Docs, I have the following open: 40 Google Chrome tabs (which is using up absolutely all of my 16GB of RAM), the Spotify app that's actively playing music, and the Clock app for tracking my time.

I’ve been able to type smoothly without any interruptions, but if I need to open a new tab or drag a window to the other display, there’s definite lag. Most people might not have these many tabs open at once, but for a dual-display laptop that encourages multitasking, it seems like something the Yoga Book 9i should be able to handle flawlessly.

When switching between landscape and book modes, it took longer than I’d like for my windows to figure out where they were supposed to be and snap into place. Plus, my Spotify and Clock apps wouldn’t be fully expanded for some reason, leaving an odd gap between the apps and my taskbar.

A passable virtual keyboard and trackpad

With eight fingers, you can bring up the Yoga Book 9i’s virtual keyboard and trackpad. It’s a fully equipped keyboard that looks just like the included physical keyboard — minus the Copilot button.

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i's virtual keyboard Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

This keyboard is great in a pinch if you forgot to bring along the physical keyboard or just need to type a few things, but it would never be my first choice. The haptic and visual feedback when typing is helpful, but my typical typing speed was slashed in half while using the virtual keyboard — and I made a lot more errors.

When using the virtual trackpad, the cursor can jump occasionally if you move your finger down too far and touch the virtual left- or right-click buttons.

If you have the physical keyboard on the top half and the virtual touchpad on the bottom half, it’s also possible to lose the cursor behind the keyboard — however, this is an issue that can happen when using the Bluetooth mouse, too.

Regular cleaning is necessary

If you’re using the virtual keyboard and trackpad, you’ll constantly have to be cleaning fingerprint smudges off the display. These smudges can obviously be avoided by using the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, but the chassis is slightly fingerprint-attracting as well.

Look at all the smudges on the Yoga Book 9i. Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

After only a few weeks of using the Yoga Book 9i, its beautiful Tidal Teal chassis has the same amount of fingerprints that my daily driver laptop accumulated over months.

Conveniently portable setup

There are a lot of components included with the purchase of a Yoga Book 9i, like a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, a Gen-3 Digital Pen, a folio, and of course, the laptop itself.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

At first, it seemed like a lot to keep up with, especially as someone who flits back and forth between home and remote locations throughout the workday. But in practice, it was easy to pack up all the components, and it was all relatively light.

By itself, the Yoga Book 9i is just under 3 pounds. If you bring along all the other components, you’ll be adding about 4.1 pounds to your bag.

It’d be great if everything was lighter, but it didn’t feel like much extra weight in my backpack compared to my daily driver laptop. That said, an included travel bag to keep everything together in your backpack would be a nice addition.

What I dislike about the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i

Clearly, there’s a lot I love about the Yoga Book 9i — but there were a few things that made me shake my head at this laptop.

Where are all the ports?

The Yoga Book 9i is lacking in the ports department, offering only USB-C ports. Yes, it is a dual-display laptop, but the Asus Zenbook Duo proved that it’s possible to deck out a dual-display laptop with a plethora of helpful ports.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

On the left side, you’ll find one USB-C (Thunderbolt) port and a Lenovo Reset Recovery switch that can be triggered using a smartphone’s tiny SIM eject tool.

Flipping to the right side, there’s the power button, a webcam killswitch, and two USB-C (Thunderbolt) ports, one of which has AOU BC 1.2 support for faster mobile charging.

Short battery life (and a short charging cable to boot)

I didn’t expect a laptop with two 2880 x 1800-pixel OLED displays to last an incredibly long time, but I really hoped it would at least last a full workday with its new “more efficient” Intel chip.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

To make matters worse, it has a short charging cable, just like Lenovo’s Slim 7 14 I recently tested. The only slight saving grace here is that the Yoga Book 9i has a USB-C port on both sides for more convenient charging.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i Geekbench 6 score

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9 earned a multi-core score of 8,642 on the Geekbench 6 performance benchmark. This isn’t a terrible score, but it’s not great either.

Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

For comparison, the Asus Zenbook Duo — another dual-screen laptop — earned a multi-core score of 10,344. Granted, the Zenbook Duo is equipped with a slightly more powerful Meteor Lake chip, but it also costs less than the Yoga Book 9.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i battery life

To test the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i’s battery life, we looped Tears of Steel in 1080p at 50% brightness until it died. It lasted a mere 7 hours and 5 minutes with the virtual keyboard and trackpad pulled up, so if you’re actively using both displays, expect the battery life to be even less.

The Asus Zenbook Duo — which has a slightly more powerful processor and two lower-res OLED displays — lasted 8 hours and 42 minutes with the PCMark10 battery benchmark.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i webcam and microphone

In a world full of blurry laptop webcams, the Yoga Book 9i’s 5MP webcam is a breath of fresh air. Colors rendered accurately, from my flushed cheeks to my green eyes and dark blue jacket — and I could spot individual strands of hair, fairly crisp lines around my face, and unfortunately, the blemishes on my chin.

Can you believe this photo was taken on a webcam?! Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable

The microphone is also higher quality than what you’ll find on most laptops. I hopped on a call with a friend to test the microphone quality of the Yoga Book 9i, my daily driver Yoga 9i, and my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra — and the Yoga Book 9i came out on top as the clear winner.

Is the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i worth it?

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is absolutely worth it. It’s a relatively pricey $2,000 laptop, but for that price, you’ll get two gorgeous OLED displays, exceptional sound quality, and a slew of premium accessories that turn this laptop into a workstation.

And as long as you’re near an outlet, you won’t have to worry about the Yoga Book 9i’s short battery life.

If stronger performance, a better battery life, or port availability are more important to you than high-res displays, premium sound, and workstation accessories, the Asus Zenbook Duo might be more up your alley.

Tinder's new feature lets you 'Share My Date' with friends and family

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 05:35

Tinder users have a new safety feature at their fingertips: "Share My Date" will let people share date plans directly with friends and family via a single link.

The dating app shared the news on Monday, announcing that anyone on Tinder can now create a shareable link that will summarize details about an upcoming date — date, time, location — along with a photo and link to the profile of the Tinder match. Tinder users who receive the link can view the match's full profile, but non-users will have a limited view. According to TechCrunch, the links will expire after a couple of months.

The shared page can also include edited notes, so up-to-date information is provided.

SEE ALSO: It's easy to catfish strangers on dating apps

Share My Date is the result of data garnered by Tinder: over 50 percent of users under 30 say they let their friends know the details of their dates before they take place. Meanwhile, 19 percent said they tell their moms.

The feature seems pretty extensive, a build-on to the app's Matchmaker feature — where friends can recommend matches — and its evolving set of safety tools.

Tinder is rolling out the feature in the next few months across the world, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, India, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Brazil, Singapore, Switzerland, Mexico, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand.

The farthest-away pictures of Earth ever taken

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 05:00

NASA's exploration robots have rumbled around Mars, swooped around Saturn, and flown well beyond the planets, into interstellar space.

But the space agency's engineers often direct their machines to peer back at the vivid blue dot in the distance.

"During almost every mission we turn around and take a picture back home," NASA's former chief historian, Bill Barry, told Mashable. "There seems to be an irresistible tendency to look back at home."

"During almost every mission we turn around and take a picture back home."

Indeed, in the cosmic images below you'll glimpse some of the farthest-away views of our humble, ocean-blanketed Earth ever captured by humanity. When we view other objects, worlds, stars, or even galaxies, we often see just dots. But to most of the cosmos, we're just a dot in the vast ether, too.

From 804,000 miles away, we can still see Earth in its true, marbled form, and even spy the shadowed moon, too.

NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft — which traveled to the rubbly asteroid Bennu to successfully capture a sample — snapped this image en route to its deeper space destination. In this black and white photo, Earth and the moon are about a quarter million miles apart. Unlike most space exploration robots, OSIRIS-REx will return back home to drop its precious asteroid sample into Earth's atmosphere; from there the sample will plummet to the surface.

A dot in the Martian sky Earth seen above Mars' horizon. Credit: NASA / JPL / Cornell / Texas AM

NASA's Spirit rover, which explored the Martian surface for six years and found evidence of a once watery planet, snapped this historic image in 2004.

"This is the first image ever taken of Earth from the surface of a planet beyond the Moon," wrote NASA.

You can see the rolling Martian hills below, and a relatively faint Earth high in Mars' atmosphere.

Here on Earth, with the unaided eye, Mars looks like a bright red dot in the sky to us Earthlings.

Zooming past Earth

En route to Jupiter in 2013, NASA's Juno spacecraft swung around Earth to pick up speed, a strategy known as a gravity assist. Meanwhile, a camera aboard the craft captured views of Juno approaching Earth and the moon, beginning from 600,000 miles away.

"The result was an intriguing, low-resolution glimpse of what our world would look like to a visitor from afar," NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory wrote.

By 2016, Juno arrived at the "King of the Planets," hundreds of millions of miles beyond Earth.

In 2013, NASA's Cassini spacecraft snapped an exceptional view of our vivid blue planet beyond Saturn's glorious rings.

"At a distance of just under 900 million miles, Earth shines bright among the many stars in the sky, distinguished by its bluish tint," NASA writes.

Earth's rich blue color, clearly visible throughout much of the solar system, comes from sunlight scattered in our planet's atmosphere. The blue wavelength of light is short and choppy, allowing atmospheric molecules to scatter it around, creating a blue sky.

Not many spacecraft visit Mercury, the closest planet to the sun.

But in 2013, NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft — short for Mercury Surface, Space, Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging — captured this image of Earth and the moon from 61 million miles away. At the time, the mission was actually looking for possible small moons around Mercury.

Earth and the moon can be quite dim from such a distance, so MESSENGER captured a long exposure of reflected light from their respective surfaces. "They appear exceptionally bright and large when, in reality, both are less than a pixel in size in this image," NASA wrote.

In this image captured by the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite, you can see the rarely viewed dark side of the moon in front of the sunlit Earth. It's a shot from 1 million miles away.

Perhaps the most poignant picture of Earth is also the smallest view of Earth.

Over three decades ago, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft — which has journeyed deeper into space than any other mission — captured this image from a whopping 3.8 billion miles away. "The planet occupies less than a single pixel in the image and thus is not fully resolved," NASA explains.

Making the shot especially glorious is a ray of sunlight fortuitously intersecting our planet.

The great astronomer and thinker Carl Sagan suggested Voyager take the image before NASA shut down the camera to save energy. The vista didn't disappoint. As Sagan wrote:

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
