What’s inside the Apple Vision Pro box? 9 things that come with the headset

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 13:44

This Apple Vision Pro unboxing, thanks to ultra-popular tech YouTuber MKBHD (also known as Marques Brownlee), gives us insight into what nearly $4,000 gets you.

"Alright! It's finally here," Brownlee said, carrying a sizable brown box to a table. "This is the beginning of Apple's spatial computing journey."

After a brief one-minute introduction, Brownlee began unpacking the contents inside.

Brownlee starts off by removing three white boxes from the original brown box. He notes that one of the boxes, which houses a case, is "incredibly flimsy." However, comments that the packaging inside one of the other boxes — the one that holds the Vision Pro — is "quality."

Continuing to unbox, here are the bits and bobs Brownlee uncovered from the Apple Vision Pro package:

1. Apple Vision Pro

The headset ships with a stretchy cover that protects the head-mounted display.

2. Optical inserts (optional)

These are lenses that can be magnetically attached to the Vision Pro if you wear glasses.

3. Vision Pro travel case (optional)

A soft white case that lets you carry the Vision Pro around safely and securely.

4. Two pamphlets

Booklets that detail how to use and care for the Apple Vision Pro.

5. A microfiber cloth

A cloth that helps you keep the Vision Pro clean, allowing you to polish its glass component and remove smudges from the lenses.

6. Two light seals

Magnetic attachments that block stray light.

7. Dual-loop band

Many journalists who have tried the Apple Vision Pro, including Brownlee himself, have complained that the Vision Pro feels too heavy. The dual-loop band, similar to the Elite Strap on the Meta Quest 3, is designed to make the headset feel more comfortable.

8. Battery pack

You'll need to attach a 3,166 mAh battery pack to the Vision Pro, which should sit in one of your pockets. Yes, it's likely to look super dorky.

9. USB-C to USB-C braided cable and charging brick

These two work in unison to charge the aforementioned battery pack. Brownlee notes that it's a 30W charging brick.

You can now play 'Death Stranding' on iPhone. Here’s how to get it.

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 13:09

Teased last year at Apple's "Wonderlust" event, Death Stranding: Director's Cut has finally arrived on iOS devices and can now be played on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and Apple M-series-powered Mac computers.

Developed by acclaimed video game designer Hideo Kojima and starring The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus, Death Stranding follows Sam Porter Bridges, a courier in a post-apocalyptic United States, tasked with reconnecting isolated communities and rebuilding the nation. Originally released in 2019 on PS4, Death Stranding is a surreal, logistics sim with some neat and innovative multiplayer mechanics. A Director's Cut for PS5 was released in 2021, which offered more weapons and vehicles, along with 4K resolution and haptic support for DualShock controllers.

SEE ALSO: 'Death Stranding' is a haunting sci-fi masterpiece How to get Death Stranding on iOS

If you're itching to play Death Stranding on your iOS device, you can grab it on the App Store today for the price of $19.99. The game currently retails on consoles and PCs for $39.99, but if you buy it through the App Store, it will be available across all your compatible iOS devices. The game also supports cross-device syncing, so any progress made on your 15 Pro Max can be transferred to your Mac computer.

AAA gaming on mobile has never been a bastion of high performance, and based on a review of this release, that pattern seems to hold in the case of Death Stranding. But if you aren't a stickler about the lower frame rates and iffy image quality, then it seems like you'll get your $20 worth.

Apple Vision Pro: 5 cool new features coming to the Zoom app

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 12:51

Apple's Vision Pro headset is hitting store shelves soon — and that means your favorite apps will have new features to accommodate its mixed-reality technology.

Well, maybe Zoom isn't your favorite app, but you almost certainly use it from time to time. For those who do, Zoom announced a bundle of interesting new toys to play with in the Vision Pro version of the popular video call app.

From 3D avatars to spatial computing, Zoom is taking full advantage of what the Vision Pro can do right as the device gets into people's hands.

SEE ALSO: Apple Vision Pro is for hipsters and hustlers, but who else? 5 cool new Zoom features for Apple Vision Pro

Your video calls are about to get a lot sillier, if nothing else. Here's how.

1. 3D representations of meeting participants

Apple has talked a big game about "Personas," which are 3D avatars meant to somewhat realistically depict another person who is wearing a Vision Pro. Put simply, Zoom is adopting this feature.

Credit: Apple

That means anyone in the meeting who is wearing a Vision Pro will be represented as a moving 3D model instead of a static video screen. Does this actually make calls more productive or immersive? Tough to say. But it's an interesting use of the technology.

2. App scaling

Another neat thing you can do with Zoom on Vision Pro is scale the app to the ideal size for your space.

Credit: Apple

Zoom's blog post says this is meant to make you "feel like [you] are in the same room" as your co-workers. We'll see if it actually works out that way.

3. Facial and hand movements

One interesting aspect of the 3D personas we discussed earlier is that they'll feature facial and hand movements for increased immersion.

Credit: Apple

At least, that's the ideal version of this feature. Without seeing it in action, we can't say whether it works as intended. It could just as easily be creepy or weird.

4. 3D object sharing

One cool feature that Zoom said is coming later this spring (so it won't be available at launch) is 3D object sharing.

This is pretty self-explanatory. If you have a 3D model you want to share with your Zoom colleagues, you can do that. They'll see it in their space so they can get an idea of its size, shape, and other dimensions.

This could be productive or just plain fun.

5. Pin participants

Lastly, another feature Zoom is promising for later this spring is the ability to "pin" people's feeds to any point in your physical space.

Want your least favorite colleague's video feed to be located in the trash can? You can do that.

Just don't tell anyone.

ChatGPT reportedly leaked private conversations from pharmacy customers

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 12:30

Another day, another ChatGPT data leak.

This time, it was login credentials and personal information from a pharmacy customer on a prescription drug portal. According to Ars Technica, a user named Chase Whiteside unwittingly received these chunks of a conversation in response to an unrelated query and submitted it to the tech site.

SEE ALSO: OpenAI releases ChatGPT data leak patch, but the issue isn't completely fixed

"I went to make a query (in this case, help coming up with clever names for colors in a palette)" wrote Whiteside in an email. "When I returned to access moments later, I noticed the additional conversations."

The conversations appear to be from a frustrated employee troubleshooting issues with an app (name redacted by Ars Technica) used by the pharmacy. In addition to the entire text disparaging the app, the leak included a customer's username, password, and the employee's store number. It's unclear whether this is the case, but it looks like the entire feedback ticket was included in the ChatGPT response.

This isn't the first time ChatGPT had security problems. Hackers and researchers have discovered vulnerabilities that enable them to extract sensitive information, either through prompt injection or jailbreaking.

Last March, a bug was discovered that revealed ChatGPT Plus users' payment information. Although OpenAI addressed certain issues related to ChatGPT users, it doesn't protect from personal or confidential information shared with ChatGPT. This was the case when Samsung employees using ChatGPT to help with code accidentally leaked company secrets, and is why many companies have banned ChatGPT usage.

This seems to be what happened here, but OpenAI isn't off the hook. According to its privacy policy, input data is supposed to be anonymized and stripped of any personally identifiable information. Since the makers themselves can't always pinpoint what leads to certain outputs, this leak underscores the inherent risks of LLMs.

We'll say it again: don't share any sensitive or personal information — especially if it's not yours — with ChatGPT.

Home gym starter kit: Everything you need to work out from home

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 11:24

Are you one of the many "new year, new me" types who have set their mind on taking physical fitness seriously in 2024? If so, that's awesome — we're here for self-improvement resolutions that you can stick to, no matter what time of the year it is.

But if you're not too keen on running out to sign up for a commercial gym membership, we recommend going the more convenient route: Building yourself a home gym. While acquiring home gym equipment does require an initial investment (and enough space to fit all of it) we think it's worth the effort.

Why should I build a home gym?

Having a home gym can be pricey in the beginning, but in the long run, it'll save you a ton of time, money, and stress. When you take into account how much gym membership fees add up over the years, buying and owning your home gym equipment can eventually pay for itself — so don't be fooled by the upfront cost.

SEE ALSO: The best under-desk treadmills for strolling through your workday

There's the matter of commuting, too. You'll save hours by not having to travel to your local gym multiple times per week, allowing you the time to focus more on the quality of your workouts, as well as all the stuff you do when you're not exercising. Trust us, hopping in the car to head back home after a grueling gym session is something we wouldn't wish on our worst enemy (plus, driving while exhausted isn't the safest idea).

Also, you won't have to endure the often anxiety-inducing act of working out in front of strangers, using potentially gross communal squat racks and dumbbells, and smelling everyone else's post-workout body odor. That last bit was enough to convince us, honestly.

What do I need to build a home gym?

There are only a few things you really need to get a modest, but effective home gym started: A good set of adjustable dumbbells, a workout mat, some resistance bands, 1-2 pieces of smart home gym equipment, a fitness tracker, and a recovery device. Check out our hands-on tested recommendations below for the complete home gym starter kit.

TikTok is hosting a month of creator-focused events in honor of Black History Month

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 11:00

TikTok's seasonal, identity-led programming is kicking off in 2024 with another app-wide effort to honor Black History Month, including a brand new list of who-to-follow TikTok Visionary Voices, ongoing account spotlights, and various ways to support Black creatives on and off the app.

Building on previous events for Black History Month, AAPI Heritage Month, Latin Heritage Month, and Pride, TikTok's 2024 celebration includes a new Innovate Together Grant Program, a partnership with capital-raising nonprofit Black Girl Ventures. The company will offer $50,000 to small business owners, entrepreneurs, and content creators in the beauty, lifestyle, and consumer sectors, TikTok explains.

Applications are open now.

In-app programming will include homepage spotlights of Black-owned businesses, including Topicals, Pat McGrath, Natural Girl Wigs, and Sorella, and nonprofit organizations Black Girls Code, Raise Fashion, and Black Girl Ventures.

SEE ALSO: TikTok is criticizing young girls who shop at Sephora. They're missing the point.

The celebration also includes the app's first #ShopBlack program — hinting at the platform's growing emphasis on e-commerce (read: TikTok Shop) opportunities. #ShopBlack will spotlight Black-owned businesses and Black creators who are generating profit from the TikTok Shop Affiliate program.

Those selected for the app's Visionary Voices list will have their name and image displayed around the country IRL as well, with TikTok's partnership with Screenvision Media (part of the platform's "Out of Phone" branding opportunities) putting honorees in ads appearing in 1,500 movie theaters nationwide.

Last year, TikTok launched the #BlackTikTok campaign, its first-ever Black Visionary Voices creator list, and a series of spotlights for growing Black-owned businesses and creatives, all in an effort to give creative and cultural credit to the community behind most (if not all) of the internet's favorite memes, trends, dances, and music.

Black creators on the app "use their industry-shifting creativity to celebrate, honor, and shape Black culture and history," TikTok writes of this year's Black History Month celebration. "This year's honorees are forging new paths in entertainment, beauty, education, health, fashion, food, music, and more."

Henry Cavill assembles 'The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare' in new trailer

Mashable - Tue, 01/30/2024 - 10:40

Guy Ritchie's back with yet another crack team of hardboiled specialists and crooked characters to get the job done their way. To pull one over on some dodgy geezers, inevitably finding themselves sharing a tumble down the sink after copping a flower pot (Google it).

But this one's a little different, set during World War II and supposedly inspired by true events — based on declassified files of the British War Department.

Directed and co-written by Ritchie, the dramatically titled The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare has a brand new trailer that introduces you swiftly to such a league of extraordinary rogues, led by Henry Cavill and Cary Elwes. Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusamokun, Henrique Zaga, Til Schweiger, and Henry Golding also star.

The film apparently tells the tale of a top secret combat unit formed by Winston Churchill alongside some military folks and a certain Bond author Ian Fleming, sent on a mission to fight the Nazis by unconventional means, and preceding the British SAS and Black Ops warfare. Sounds like a lot, but if you're here for a history lesson, maybe grain of salt?

The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare hit cinemas April 19.

Once you arrive home, you have several ways to open the box — use a pin code, access the box via the app, use a traditional key, or use voice control with Alexa or Google Assistant. The variety of access methods also means you can share the pin code or open the box via the app should the kids get home first and desperately want that new toy Amazon delivered earlier.

The eufy Security SmartDrop is also designed to withstand weather, so no wind or rain storm will damage your deliveries from here on out.

If you tend to worry about package deliveries sitting on the porch or no longer want to text the neighbors about going to rescue an important delivery from your doorstep, today's deal on the eufy SmartDrop delivery box is your sign that it's time to take that worry off your plate.

The Series 9 debuted in September, making it the newest non-Ultra Apple Watch you can get. Though it's now bereft of its blood oxygen monitoring ability, it still has plenty of great features you'll want to take advantage of, like the new Double Tap function. This lets you use a pinching motion with your index feature to your thumb to quickly answer or silence calls, reply to messages, control your music, and more.

This iteration also includes a brighter screen, zippier processing, and all the health and productivity features you've come to expect from the lineup by now. It's still a very capable option if you haven't bought into the Apple Watch ecosystem yet, or if you have and just want an upgrade. It's especially good at this price, so you may want to act quickly to take advantage of this deal.
